Power for Living as a Young Christian Leader 2 Timothy 3:10-17 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 In the Bible, we find: Endurance Life in the Spirit Salvation Wisdom 2 Timothy 3:10-17 In the Bible, we find: Endurance Life in the Spirit Salvation Wisdom 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Luke 9:23-24 “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.” Luke 21:16-19 “You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. Everyone will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. Stand firm, and you will win life.” 2 Timothy 3 “...everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted...” (v. 12) 2 Timothy 3 “...yet from them all the Lord rescued me.” (v. 11) Job 23 “My complaint today is still a bitter one, and I try hard not to groan aloud. If only I knew where to find God, I would go to his court.” I go east, but he is not there. I go west, but I cannot find him. I do not see him in the north, for he is hidden. I look to the south, but he is concealed.” Job 23 “But he knows where I am going. And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold." “And let us run with perseverance the race Hebrews 12 marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 In the Bible, we find: Strength through Suffering Life in the Spirit Salvation Wisdom 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3 “All Scripture is God-breathed…” (v. 16) Genesis 1:1-2 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Spirit / Breath of God “ruach” breath, wind John 3:8 “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” Isaiah 40:7-8 “The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” John 14-16 “the Helper” “the Spirit of truth” “the Counselor” “the Comforter” “the Advocate” John 14:26 “…he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 15:26-27 “…he will bear witness about me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.” John 16:14 “He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” The Spirit (“Breath”) of God and the Word of God have one aim: Jesus Christ 2 Timothy 3:10-17 In the Bible, we find: Endurance Life in the Spirit Salvation Wisdom 2 Timothy 3 “...able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” (v. 15) Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” 2 Timothy 3 “...so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (v. 17) Colossians 2:2-3 “I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 In the Bible, we find: Endurance Life in the Spirit Salvation Wisdom 2 Timothy 3 “...able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” (v. 15) 1 to those who “For the word1ofCorinthians the cross is folly are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” 1 Corinthians 1 “For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.” - Stephen Covey If you want to be wise, stay close to the Source of wisdom. “Therefore let us bow down and worship Jesus Christ. If we are John Piper impressed with the scholarship of man and the achievements of scientific knowledge, then let us not play the fool by trumpeting a tiny chirp and ignoring the thunder clap of omniscience. Jesus alone is worthy of our highest admiration. Jesus alone is worthy of our trust. He can show us the Father (Matthew 11:27). He can give us irresistible wisdom (Luke 21:15). He can see how to make all things work together for our good (Romans 8:28). None of his judgments about anything is ever mistaken (John 8:16). He teaches the way of God with infallible truthfulness (Matthew 22:16). Trust him. Admire him. Follow him.”
