Introduction

So far in Deuteronomy we have studied the concept of “These are the Words that Moses Spoke” - Deuteronomy in Hebrew (The second giving of the Law - Greek).
The Law was given to Moses
Still is God’s law
He repeated His law and commanded Moses to remind Israel of the Words He had spoken
This week’s portion is Ki Tavo- “when you come”
Last week:
“When you go outDeuteronomy 21: 10
Deuteronomy 21:10 NKJV
“When you go out to war against your enemies, and the Lord your God delivers them into your hand, and you take them captive,
Honouring the nations
Shinning light to the nations
about others
Going out in to the world and
Keeping holy
Principles on how to live with others and themselves
In contrast - this week’s is called : “When You Come” the promised land
Deuteronomy 26:1 NKJV
“And it shall be, when you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it,
Honouring God
Living in His light
About His holiness
Principles in living with Him
Blessings for obedience
Cursing for disobedience

Bible Study Scripture

Our Bible study is based on Deuteronomy 26:1-29:8
This portion is divided in three chapters:
Chapter 26:
Principles of the First Fruits
Humility and selfless giving
Chapter 27:
Setting up of the Stones with The Law of God written on them
Curses if we live out of the harmony with God’s selfless love - being selfish
Chapter 28:
More of the laws of blessings if we obey
More of the laws of curses if we do not obey
Chapter 29:
Reminder of His provision

Presentation

Deuteronomy 26:1 NKJV
“And it shall be, when you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it,
Another place where a similar verse is found:
Deuteronomy 17:14 NKJV
“When you come to the land which the Lord your God is giving you, and possess it and dwell in it, and say, ‘I will set a king over me like all the nations that are around me,’
In the original language- Hebrew- the difference is the letter Vav which is found in Deuteronomy 26:1, but not in Deuteronomy 17:14.
ו
We studied the letter VAV - in our sermon “It’s all about the consequences”

The verse in Deuteronomy 26:1 is:
about the presence of God
there are consequences to His presence
The verse in Deuteronomy 17:14 is:
Man: self-focussed
Not recognition to God
Recognition to man - king
God is giving- not man
1 Samuel 8:1–19 NKJV
Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel. The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice. Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.” So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who asked him for a king. And he said, “This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and appoint them for his own chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots. He will appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. And he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants. He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants. And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants. And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord will not hear you in that day.” Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,
Man attempting to gain glory and to do his own thing
Man ends up crying and asking for help
Man is helpless in his attempt to take up on his own glory
Deuteronomy 26:1–2 NKJV
“And it shall be, when you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it, that you shall take some of the first of all the produce of the ground, which you shall bring from your land that the Lord your God is giving you, and put it in a basket and go to the place where the Lord your God chooses to make His name abide.
First Fruits is introduced again- which we will come back to shortly
The Lord chooses where to make His name abide
2 Chronicles 6:6 NKJV
Yet I have chosen Jerusalem, that My name may be there, and I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.’

Deuteronomy 26:3–4 (NKJV)
And you shall go to the one who is priest in those days, and say to him, ‘I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come to the country which the Lord swore to our fathers to give us.’
“Then the priest shall take the basket out of your hand and set it down before the altar of the Lord your God.
Now regarding the First Fruits
Deuteronomy 26:10 NKJV
and now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land which you, O Lord, have given me.’ “Then you shall set it before the Lord your God, and worship before the Lord your God.
John 12:24 NKJV
Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.
1 Corinthians 15:20 NKJV
But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Deuteronomy 26:8–11 NKJV
So the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders. He has brought us to this place and has given us this land, “a land flowing with milk and honey”; and now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land which you, O Lord, have given me.’ “Then you shall set it before the Lord your God, and worship before the Lord your God. So you shall rejoice in every good thing which the Lord your God has given to you and your house, you and the Levite and the stranger who is among you.
Psalm 30:1–5 NKJV
I will extol You, O Lord, for You have lifted me up, And have not let my foes rejoice over me. O Lord my God, I cried out to You, And You healed me. O Lord, You brought my soul up from the grave; You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. Sing praise to the Lord, you saints of His, And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name. For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning.
God planned the first fruit in Deuteronomy to be presented by the High Priest in Hebrews, and gave a Psalm to David to rejoice and to give Him praise.
It was the humility and selfless giving of our Lord Jesus that made it possible for us to love Him and keep His commandments:
John 14:15 NKJV
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.
Deuteronomy 26:16–19 (NKJV)
“This day the Lord your God commands you to observe these statutes and judgments; therefore you shall be careful to observe them with all your heart and with all your soul.
Today you have proclaimed the Lord to be your God, and that you will walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His judgments, and that you will obey His voice.
Also today the Lord has proclaimed you to be His special people, just as He promised you, that you should keep all His commandments,
and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, in praise, in name, and in honor, and that you may be a holy people to the Lord your God, just as He has spoken.”
Today:
1- Give Him Glory (vs 17) and He will share that glory with you (vs 18)
You PROCLAIM Him. He proclaims you
Jesus set the pattern
John 17:1–5 NKJV
Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
John 17:22 NKJV
And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:
Matthew 10:33 NKJV
But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
Today
2- Develop His Character (v18) - that you should keep all His commandments. The Law of God is the Character of God
3- Give you authority (v19) - above all the nations, in praise, name and honour
4- To make you Holy - that you made be holy
Matthew 22:34–40 NKJV
But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
The Law and the Prophets derived from these commandments. The Law has not been abolished but fulfilled:
Deuteronomy 6:4–5 NKJV
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
Leviticus 19:18 NKJV
You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
The Lord has given us GRACE to obey his commandments- not to just do what we want, but to be holy, as He promised “you SHALL” Deuteronomy 26:19
Deuteronomy 26:19 NKJV
and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, in praise, in name, and in honor, and that you may be a holy people to the Lord your God, just as He has spoken.”

Deuteronomy 27:1–3 NKJV
Now Moses, with the elders of Israel, commanded the people, saying: “Keep all the commandments which I command you today. And it shall be, on the day when you cross over the Jordan to the land which the Lord your God is giving you, that you shall set up for yourselves large stones, and whitewash them with lime. You shall write on them all the words of this law, when you have crossed over, that you may enter the land which the Lord your God is giving you, ‘a land flowing with milk and honey,’ just as the Lord God of your fathers promised you.
Deuteronomy 27:8 NKJV
And you shall write very plainly on the stones all the words of this law.”
Joshua 1:7–8 NKJV
Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Jesus answered with The Law:
Luke 4:4–12 (NKJV)
But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ ” (Deut 8:3)
Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.
Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ” (Deut 6:13)
Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.
For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,’ (Ps 91:11)
and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” (Ps 91:12)
And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ” (Deut 6:16)

Deuteronomy 27:9–10 NKJV
Then Moses and the priests, the Levites, spoke to all Israel, saying, “Take heed and listen, O Israel: This day you have become the people of the Lord your God. Therefore you shall obey the voice of the Lord your God, and observe His commandments and His statutes which I command you today.”
You SHALL do it
What is the determining factor that you shall do it?
Deuteronomy 27:11–13 NKJV
And Moses commanded the people on the same day, saying, “These shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people, when you have crossed over the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin; and these shall stand on Mount Ebal to curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
12 Tribes of Israel - 6 tribes from Jacob’s wives (blessed by promise) and 6 tribes from concubines:
Genesis 35:23–26 NKJV
the sons of Leah were Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin; the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali; and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.
Genesis 35:22 NKJV
And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
Reuben was not blessed although he was the first born because of this sin
GEREZIM (cut)
Gerizim (gher’-iz-im) = Cutters down; fellers; cuttings off. Divisions. (The mount of blessing.)
EBAL (stone)
Ebal (e’-bal) = Stone; stony; a heap of ruins; heap of bareness; bare. Heaps of confusion.
Smith, S., & Cornwall, J. (1998). In The exhaustive dictionary of Bible names (p. 61). North Brunswick, NJ: Bridge-Logos.
The children of promise are to be a CUT above - holy
The children who are not of promise to be a stony ruin
Paul also speaks of this distinction in Romans 9:1-13; Galatians 4:21-31
Having being grafted in (Rom 11:19-20) to the flock of Israel (John 10: 15-16), we were also recipients of His blessings:
Going back to
Deuteronomy 27:13 (NKJV)
and these shall stand on Mount Ebal to curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
Deuteronomy 27:14-26 list all the curses our selfish, self centered, godless choices generate (read if we have time)
GRACE TO OBEY
Romans 1:5 NKJV
Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,
GRACE TO BE HOLY
1 Peter 1:13–16 NKJV
Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
Consequently - If we are HIS, we can OBEY
Deuteronomy 28:1 NKJV
“Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth.
The blessings are listed in Deuteronomy 28:2-14
Deuteronomy 28:1–2 NKJV
“Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:
Deuteronomy 28:8–9 NKJV
“The Lord will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you. “The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways.
Again the curses are reaffirmed in Deuteronomy 28:15-19
(read if we have time)
Deuteronomy 28:15 NKJV
“But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:
Deuteronomy 27:25–26 NKJV
‘Cursed is the one who takes a bribe to slay an innocent person.’ “And all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’ ‘Cursed is the one who does not confirm all the words of this law.’ “And all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’ ”
Galatians 3:10 NKJV
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.”
Deuteronomy 29:14–29 NKJV
“I make this covenant and this oath, not with you alone, but with him who stands here with us today before the Lord our God, as well as with him who is not here with us today (for you know that we dwelt in the land of Egypt and that we came through the nations which you passed by, and you saw their abominations and their idols which were among them—wood and stone and silver and gold); so that there may not be among you man or woman or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the Lord our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations, and that there may not be among you a root bearing bitterness or wormwood; and so it may not happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall have peace, even though I follow the dictates of my heart’—as though the drunkard could be included with the sober. “The Lord would not spare him; for then the anger of the Lord and His jealousy would burn against that man, and every curse that is written in this book would settle on him, and the Lord would blot out his name from under heaven. And the Lord would separate him from all the tribes of Israel for adversity, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this Book of the Law, so that the coming generation of your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, would say, when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses which the Lord has laid on it: ‘The whole land is brimstone, salt, and burning; it is not sown, nor does it bear, nor does any grass grow there, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and His wrath.’ All nations would say, ‘Why has the Lord done so to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?’ Then people would say: ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt; for they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they did not know and that He had not given to them. Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against this land, to bring on it every curse that is written in this book. And the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.’ “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
