Genesis 10:1-32, “Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. (2) The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. (3) And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. (4) And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. (5) By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations. (6) And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. (7) And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtecha: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan. (8) And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. (9) He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. (10) And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. (11) Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, (12) And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city. (13) And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim, (14) And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim. (15) And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, and Heth, (16) And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite, (17) And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite, (18) And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad. (19) And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest, unto Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha. (20) These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations. (21) Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born. (22) The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram. (23) And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash. (24) And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber. (25) And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. (26) And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah, (27) And Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah, (28) And Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba, (29) And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan. (30) And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest unto Sephar a mount of the east. (31) These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations. (32) These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood."
Introduction
As we deal with Genesis 10 this morning, I want to preface it by saying this will be more teaching than preaching. What we are reviewing is the biblical account of The Origin of Nations, which is indeed world history. Now, after reading all 32 verses and considering my preaching style may make some of you nervous, however, let me try and put your mind at ease, I am not going to attempt to go through each verse.
Allow me to say by way of introduction that today, it is quite popular to try and find out your family ancestry or genealogy. There are several companies that will take a sample of your DNA and trace it back to nations, regions, races, and tribes. Also, they will tell you what percentage of each you possess. In addition, depending on the company and how much you are willing to pay, they may even connect you with near relatives who have also used their service. Many people have discovered that they are linked to a famous person or maybe an infamous person. Personally, I find nothing wrong with this pursuit of knowledge. In fact, it may be very useful when dealing with health-related issues.
Nevertheless, at the end of the day, you will invariably trace your linage back to Noah—particularly, one of Noah’s three sons: Shem, Ham, or Japheth. Amen somebody. I could really stop right there.
But, for the next few moments, let us examine the text. One of the revelations we will discover is that although wicked sinners were drowned during the flood, sin itself survived the flood. And, that truth has already been exposed in the previous chapter 9:22-24, where we read of the drunken stupor of Noah and the inappropriate actions of his youngest son Ham toward his father. The result of this incident was Noah placing a curse upon his grandson Canaan, and blessings upon Shem and Japheth. Interestingly, the only recorded words spoken by Noah are cursing and blessing found in 9:25-27. Notably, going forward the rest of human history will directly or indirectly revolve around Noah’s curse upon his grandson Canaan, and Noah’s blessing upon his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Many people want to know why Noah cursed Canaan rather than Ham. No one can really say for certain. However, I should point out that Ham was not cursed; therefore, there is no such thing as the curse of Ham. This falsehood surfaced in the 16th and 17th Centuries and was used to justify the enslavement of Africans. This has embittered many black people to reject Christianity. It was a lie then and it is a lie today. Amen somebody.
V.1 – “Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.”
The word “generations” mean descendants or families of the sons of Noah. The genealogy or origins of these sons. Bible genealogies are important because they are connected to the promises of God. It is through biblical genealogies that we can trace the identity of the promised “Seed of the woman”in Genesis 3:15, whom we now know is Jesus Christ. In fact, I believe that God chose the tool of genealogies to substantiate His Truth claims and hush the mouths of His critics. Therefore, a person can choose to reject the truth, but they cannot disprove it. Amen Somebody.
Vv.2-5, deal with Japhet and his descendants (15). (Europeans, Russians, Greeks, and India)
Vv.6-20, deal with Ham and his descendants (19). (Egypt, Libya, Canaan, China)
A distinguishing person in the line of Ham is seen in Vv.8-10, which reads, “And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. (9) He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. (10) And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.” We will learn more about Nimrod in Chapter 11 at the construction of the Tower of Babel. But since, the Spirit of God distinguishes him, we should pay attention. Nimrod, whose name means “rebellion” or the “the valiant,” was known as “a mighty hunter before the LORD.” Simply put, Nimrod was a warrior against God, which is displayed as his actions unfold in the next chapter. The first mention of a kingdom (v.10) is attributed to Nimrod, which makes him the first king. He is the principal person at the building of the Tower of Babel.
Vv.21-31, deal with Shem and his descendants (26). (Arabia, Persia, Assyria, Syria
In essence, the author of Genesis (Moses) is really trying to get to the most important son, Shem. It is through Shem that God would call Abraham, cut a covenant with him, and bring forth the Messiah—Jesus Christ.
V. 32 – “These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood."
With reference to the flood, God used these three sons of Noah to repopulate the whole earth. Now this is either true or not. I believe it is true. What say you? And since it is true, it means that all humanity are the offspring of one of these three sons, who were all the same blood and race. As I said before, racism (the belief that certain races of people are by birth and nature superior to others), along with Critical Race Theory is an ill-conceived idea that ought to be done away with immediately. Amen somebody.
In this Table of Nations before us the Spirit of God leads Moses to provide for us a clear layout of how we are all related to one another and how God works His purposes through the affairs of men.
Conclusion
The bottom line is that this is the only true and accurate account of human history. Meaning it is without error. The people, places, and events are all 100% true, and accurate, and worthy of study. Amen somebody. So, until next time, may the Lord God bless and keep you is my earnest prayer. Amen.
