Introduction

We have seen that Matthew highlights four aspects of Jesus’ identity:
Messiah, the OT anointed One
New Abraham, creating a new Israel
New Moses, better prophet and law giver
Immanuel, the true Son of God
In this passage, we see that Jesus recapitulating Israel’s story.
Out of Egypt
Wilderness
Baptized in the Jordon

Jesus is truly human (v.15)

As a human, Jesus “fulfills all righteousness”. (Active and Passive Obedience)
Jesus alone truly understands what obedience means.
He is our elder brother, our mighty champion, and our great example.

Jesus is truly God (v. 16-17)

We see the trinity on full display. (Delighting in the Trinity)
If we do not have the true Christ then we do not have true salvation.

Jesus is rewriting our Story

Israel had a story of faithlessness and sin!
Jesus is the new Israel, the true Son of God.
Jesus rewrote Israel’s story and he is doing the same for us!
