INTRODUCTION: Why Exodus? 3500 years ago have anything to do with us? It answers the question God are you paying attention? Have you forgotten what is going on?
What if the slavery of Isreal is really about our slavery too? What if it is more about getting eygpt out of Isreal not the other way around? What if we are saved by the blood.

1. God protects His people. (Exodus 1:1-7)

Exodus 1:1 ESV
1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household:
These - actually “and”. This is just a continuing of Genesis. Gen 17. Followed Abraham’s family. There was a famine, so they all came down to Egypt.
Exodus 1:2–5 ESV
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt.
HAHA - we have half of these in nursery. Come on Zebulun!
70 of them went down. God saved this one singular family. God had a plan for them.
They probably would have died. first famine then armies.
Exodus 1:6–7 ESV
6 Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. 7 But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.
Joseph died - a good man. Only one who did not have major sin mentioned in OT.
but - were fruitful and increased greatly - What was the command that started genesis 1? Be fruitful and multiply. They are doing that! True to what God has called them.
the land was filled with them - In Gen 47 . It says that Pharaoh gave Israel land in Goshen. very fertile land in northern Egypt. Essentially allowing them to be protected and live in peace for hundreds of years. Gen 46:2-3
Genesis 46:2–3 (ESV)
2 And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.” 3 Then he said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation.
They are now 2-3 million people.

When you’re not where you want to be, continue doing what God told you to do.

2. Satan causes hardships to disrupt God’s people. (Exodus 1:8-14)

Exodus 1:8–11 ESV
8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. 10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses.
know - did not regard him. Probably new family.
new king - didn’t use his name, theme is Pharaoh =bad.
lest they multiply - stopping them from doing what God told them.
Exodus 1:12 ESV
12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel.
The model of church growth. China, Iran. Even 1st century jerusalem.
Squish illustration. Pressure going down spreads things out.

Hardships are opportunities for God to receive more glory.

Exodus 1:13–14 ESV
13 So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.
ruthlessly - twice. Other words show plight.
slaves - they kept increasing the workload upon them until they were slaves.

3. Satan causes heartaches to disrupt God’s people. (Exodus 1:15-22)

Exodus 1:15–22 ESV
15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” 17 But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. 18 So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” 20 So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”
Exodus 1:15–16 ESV
15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.”
Shiphrah and Puah - otherwise insignificant, but we know there names, but not the Pharaoh. Shows who is more important.
birthstool - they would sit on two blocks to have a baby. The midwives would likely try to kill the baby boy.
Exodus 1:17–19 ESV
17 But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. 18 So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”
Feared God - we disobey government when they command sin. Not when covienent. (ticket story?)
V19 - vigerous - homeschool moms. haha - lady screaming in hospital.
Exodus 1:20–21 ESV
20 So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.

God provides as we obey.

Exodus 1:22 ESV
22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”
Commanded - imagine living in that nation
