Review & Overview

1. Last Study’s Review

Chps. 9-11 Paul turns his attention to Israel:

Ch. 9 Israel’s Rejection

Ch. 10 Gentile’s Reception

Ch. 11 Israel’s Restoration

Vs. 1-12 - Paul anticipates the question his readers would ask: Did God Cast Away His People?

The answer is no - Paul says Certainly Not! - And Proved it:

Because Paul is a Jew & he’s saved.

There there was the OT Scripture that supported there is a remnant - Elijah thought he was the only one left not so...

Vs. 13-24 - Since the first fruit is holy speaking of Abraham - The root is holy which made the branches holy too - Speaking of Israel.

But because of their rejection of Jesus Christ we are grafted in - But don’t get haughty or proud because if the original branches were broke off so could we.

2. Current Study’s Overview

Now in Vs. 25-36 Paul concludes this section by telling us that this relationship between God & Israel is a mystery, and he doesn’t want us to be ignorant of the fact that Israel will be restored & it’s all because God is merciful. READ...

Today we want to look at 5 things that involves Israel’s Restoration:

Involves a Mystery Vs. 25

Involves Salvation Vs. 26-27

Involves Israel’s Relationship w/ God Vs. 28-29

Involves Mercy Vs. 30-32

Involves God’s Greatness Vs. 33-36

1. Israel’s Restoration Involves a Mystery Vs. 25

1.1 Ignorance of the Mystery Vs. 25a

So Paul has a concern here and it is that we would not be ignorant of this mystery...

Mystery Greek: musterion, 27x in NT - Not mysterious or spooky - It is something that was hidden but now is revealed.

So Paul is going to reveal to us some information that was previously unknown to us as Gentiles.

This Mystery consists of 2 things:

The Blindness of Israel Vs. 25b - Look at Vs. 7 really quick...

Romans 11:7 - What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were blinded.

The elect, those who believe in Jesus obtained life but the rest were blinded.

So once again, Paul tells us that not all of Israel has a hard heart against the Messiah, or is blinded towards the Messiah, it’s only in part.

The Length of Their Blindness Vs. 25c - How long will the partial blindness will be intact? Until the fullness of the Gentiles come.

This speaks of the last Gentile that gets saved and apparently when this last person gets saved that will cause the Rapture of the Church.

1 Thessalonians 4:16 - For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

APPLICATION: What a great encouragement to tell people about Jesus, imagine telling someone about Jesus and when they get saved boom we are all saved!

When this happens, the rapture will begin God’s prophetic time clock to start ticking again with the 70th week of Daniel 9:27.

In Jeremiah 30:7 - It’s called the Jacobs Trouble

it’s the 7 years of Tribulation - This is where the lawless one will be revealed, the antichrist.

In the middle of the Tribulation at 3 1/2 yrs the antichrist goes into the temple of God claims to be God & demands to be worshipped as God.

This is what’s called the abomination of Desolation (Matt 24:15) - At the end of the Tribulation Jesus returns (Rev 19) which is when the Jews will realize that Jesus is their Messiah.

RECAP - Don’t be ignorant of this mystery - Blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of Gentiles come.

2. Israel’s Restoration Involves Salvation Vs. 26-27

As we’ve mentioned several times in our studies here in the Ch. 11 the salvation of the Jews will happen at the end of the Tribulation at the 2nd coming of Christ. Turn W/ Me to...

Matthew 24:29-31 - 29“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

The elect here speaks of the Remnant, Israel - When this happens this starts the 1,000 year rule & reign of Christ on the earth (Rev 20).

During this we will rule with Him (1 Corinthians 6:2-3) in our glorified bodies (Phil 3:21).

RECAP - Israel will be saved, God will not leave them nor forsake them.

3. Israel’s Restoration Involves Their Relationship W/ God Vs. 28-29

3.1 Hate & Love Vs. 28

Practically - The Jews are enemies of the Gospel because they rejected Jesus as the Christ.

But it was for our sake, it benefited us. Look at..

Romans 11:11 - I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles.

APPLICATION: Anytime anyone rejects the Gospel they are enemies of God

Matthew 12:30 - if you are not with Me you are against Me...

Positionally - They are loved by God - Concerning their election as God’s chosen people they are still the beloved of God.

Because of the promises or covenants to the fathers which speaks of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob.

APPLICATION: Talk about the same goes with the rest of the world - God loves the whole world but people reject God’s love.

1 John 4:9 - In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.

Romans 5:8 - But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

3.2 Gifts & Calling Are Irrevocable. Vs. 29

When God sovereignly chose Israel to be His own special people, the apple of His eye, He knew some would reject Him but, God will never utterly reject Them because God’s gifts & calling are never rescinded.

In other words, God does not take back His gifts - Once He has made an unconditional promise, He never goes back on it.

So what are these gifts & callings that Paul is talking about here? These gifts and callings that God gave Israel?

I believe these gifts are listed back in ch. 9, Turn There Really Quick If You Will...

Romans 9:4–5 - 4who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; 5of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.

Isaiah 48:12 - He called Israel to be His earthly people, separate from the rest of the nations.

And nothing can change His purposes - His gifts & calling are irrevocable.

APPLICATION: Same goes for us by the way - God has given us a gifts & callings.

Romans 6:23 - ...the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Let’s come to the 4th thing back in ch. 11

4. Israel’s Restoration Involves Mercy Vs. 30-32

4.1 Mercy Will Come To Israel Vs. 30-31

We were once untamed, disobedient people, but when Israel rejected the Messiah and the Gospel message God turned to the Gentiles in Mercy.

And since God showed His mercy to unbelieving Gentiles, how much more will He show His mercy on His chosen people the Jews.

Since the Lord has showed us mercy, we will be used to bring mercy to the Jews, how?

Well, like we learned last week, they will be provoked to jealousy through the mercy showed to us the Gentiles.

Romans 10:19 - I will provoke you to jealousy by those who are not a nation...

Mercy is holding back that which we deserve - Everyone deserve hell but through the blood shed of Jesus Christ, through God’s Mercy he holds back His wrath.

Ephesians 2:4 - God is rich in Mercy...

And all we got to do is call upon His name.

4.2 All Were Disobedient Vs. 32

Committed Greek - synkleio - Soon: It means to be with or together, it speaks of Union - kli'-o: To shut up or close.

So this word could be translated to closing someone in with something.

Here it is saying that God closed the door on everyone so that everyone could be united with disobedience - He shut us into disobedience.

Now when you first read this verse, you might get the idea that God arbitrarily condemned both Jews & Gentiles to disobedience, and there is nothing we could do about it.

But that is not the thought here - This disobedience is and was our own doing - We chose to be disobedient.

And since we and the people during this time and the Jews as a whole chose to disobey God - God said ok, I will give you what you want.

I will close you in so that you can be united with what you want which is to disobey.

What this verse is saying is this: having found both Jews & Gentiles disobedient, God is pictured as imprisoning them in that condition of disobedience, so that there will be no way out for them except on His terms.

You see he allowed commited everyone to disobedience so the he can give us His mercy. Look at the end of Vs. 32.

This disobedience provided a way for God to have mercy on everyone - Now this does not suggest that everyone is saved.

In the same way we are willfully disobedient we must willfully receive God’s Mercy.

5. Israels Restoration Involves The Mind & Things of God Vs. 33-36

Now as we come to the fifth and final point - There is a change in the literary style of writing.

up to this point, verses 25-32 Paul has been using more of an expository style of writing.

He would expound and then allude to the OT. X2

But here in Vs. 33-36 Paul he changes his style of writing to what is called a doxology: Which is a series of declarations of praise announcing who God is and what he has done—and sometimes they come in the form of a song.

5.1 God’s Wisdom Vs. 33

Wisdom is the application of Knowledge, so when God applies judgement or institutes His ways, He knows what He is doing.

The depth & riches of His wisdom is past finding out - We don’t always understand why God does what He does. In Fact Look at Vs. 34

5.2 Who Knows God’s Mind? Vs. 34

Well, it’s for sure not us - I don’t completely know God’s mind.

Isaiah 55:8-9 - thoughts / ways...

APPLICATION: The problem is when things don’t go our way we begin to question God, why God?

Romans 9:20 - who are you to question God...

God can do what He wants, when He wants & to whom He wants to do it to, God knows best.

Now there is a balance to this, especially for us Christians, for us who have a relationship w/ the Lord.

1 Corinthians 2:16 - “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

5.3 What Is Given To God? Vs. 35

The answer is nobody, we haven’t given anything to God, so He doesn’t owe us a thing - Everything came from God, & it all belongs to God.

and Vs. 36 proves this point.

5.4 To Him Are All Things Vs. 36a

Everything was made by God, it all came from God, so it all belongs to God.

Psalm 24:1 - earth is the Lord’s and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.

1 Corinthians 6:19 - Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

So He can do with is as He sees fit, whether we like it, understand it, agree with it or not.

But when we grab a hold of this idea, we’ll live our lives in such a way that all glory will go to Him.

5.5 Amen! Vs. 36b

And we like Paul will say AMEN - I agree, let be so Lord.

Lord I don’t fully understand all that You do or why You do it but I don’t have to.

Because I don’t know Your mind completely & I am certainly not Your counselor.
