Jesus is the pattern for a new humanity, one that is characterized by life, not death (as was formerly the case under Adam). Jesus has recapitulated creation -- he has become its new head. Those who walk on "the new and living way" are those who belong to this new pattern of humanity through Christ.

I. What does it mean to be human?

A. Body

Our existence is embodied; we will have bodies in the afterlife.
We should take care of our bodies, because we are “embodied souls.”

III. Why does it matter that Jesus was human?

A. Full Revelation

God is made most fully known to us through a living, breathing human with whom we interact face to face. Someone whose teachings and actions could be recorded.

B. Substitution - Intercession - Sympathy

Gregory of Nyssa: “That which is unassumed is unhealed.” Jesus has the greatest sympathy for our human condition because he entered it voluntarily. Because of this, he intercedes on our behalf.
For his death to substitute for us, he had to be fully human.

C. Pattern of Fullness of Human Life

Jesus shows us what it means to be truly human, he demonstrates a new pattern of living.

IV. Jesus the “New Head”

Jesus is literally the new head of humanity; no longer are we patterned after Adam, but after Christ.
