One of the very practical tests that they would give an inmate in the insane asylum was to take him to a janitor’s closet,
turn on the faucet, let it fill up, put a stopper at the bottom
When it overflowed, they would take the person who wanted to be released, because they felt they were now sane
give them a mop and send them to the janitor’s closet with the water running on the floor and say “Please clean up this mess.”
When they came back in Fifteen or Twenty minutes later, if the person was still mopping up the water without having turned off the faucet, they knew that person weren’t ready to leave yet.
Some of you are trying to mop up messes in your life but the faucet is still running. Some of us are trying to mop up the things in our world and in our circumstances when the source has not been addressed.
No matter what you try to fix in your personal life, your family life, your marriage your relationships, if we keep mopping the results, you will never get around to addressing the cause of the problem.
So when it comes to spiritual warfare,
in the book of Ephesians the sixth chapter, Paul is concerned that we understand the tools of authority,
the weapons of authority, the things that God has given the Christian to turn off the faucet
rather than simply spend all of our time trying to mop up the mess in our lives.
So as we continue our study in “The Armor of God”
Today’s teaching is entitled:
I. The Shield of Faith

16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
The Shield of a Roman Soldier used in battle was called a “Scutum” (sku-tim) 2 1/2 feet wide X 4 feet Length
constructed of wood covered with tough leather, often multiple layers.
They could be linked together to create a defensive barrier,
to aid soldiers in launching a spear attack while repelling the enemy’s missiles attack
They would soak the shield in water or anoint them with oil, to work better against the fiery darts
Water and oil in scripture often represent the Holy Spirit.
It was the most effective line of defense the Roman warriors used
Let’s consider the anointing of the shield. Water and oil in Scripture often represent the Holy Spirit.
Now, Scripture doesn’t point out this anointing, history does, but this is still a powerful parallel
As we saturate our faith in the power of the Holy Spirit, I’m reminded of another example of Olive Oil
In the book of Revelation we have the example of the two witnesses who are referred to as two olive trees and two lampstands.
4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth.
Each witness is represented by one olive tree and one lampstand. It takes two symbols to represent one person.
To understand this passage, we need to know what these symbols mean. The answer to the olive trees is found in Zechariah 4:2–6— two olive trees stand by a lampstand and provide oil to the lampstand.
This oil represents the Holy Spirit. The two witnesses will be olive trees because they will be filled with the Holy Spirit.

5. The shield of faith will never fail. Faith provides strength, even when it appears we are defeated. Faith says, Continue the fight; we shall overcome!
(Note) When Marriages & Relationships are falling apart, Faith say’s Keep on going “Don’t Quit” (example/my marriage)
When we take the Shield of Faith, we are better equipped to quench the “fiery darts” of Satan.

16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
What are the fiery darts of Satan?
Arrows! Arrows that are on fire! (song: Fire)
Remember the cowboy and Indian movies back in the day. When the Cowboys saw Indians coming their way, they would circle the wagon train. The Indians would go around the wagon train shooting at the Cowboys. At some point one Indian would dip his arrow in some oil and set it on fire. Then he would shoot the canvas of a wagon. Why? Because you can’t fight fire and Indians at the same time.
Satan wants to shoot fiery darts at us.
He hits us with four or five fiery arrows at once things at once. Why?
Because he knows that if he can get us to focus on one arrow, he can hit us with another.
Anybody have experienced this type of an assault?
Before you know it! things are coming at you from all directions.
How are we going to be able to handle this?
I’ve got a problem with my husband, problem with my child problem problem with my finances, problem my job.
I’m being attacked all over the place. How am I going to extinguish all of these fiery arrows?
The answer is you can’t /but the shield can. God has your back, he will put out all of the fiery darts of Satan like your shield He will cover you! (Repeat)

6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Lord I believe that Jesus is the son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
