Series - Studies On The Book Of Romans
Title - Romans 6
Review of Romans 5
the results of being justified
we have peace with God
we have access into this grace through faith
we rejoice in hope of the glory of God
we boast in tribulation
Adam and Christ compared and contrasted
Adam was a type of Christ
but Christ’s action had a different result that that of Adam’s
Adam’s offense resulted in condemnation
Christ’s righteous act results in justification of those who believe in Him
Adam’s action cause sin to abound and reign in death
Christ’s action causes grace to abound more and reign through righteousness to eternal life
This part
Paul continues on the thoughts that he opened in Romans 5.20-21, namely -
the victory of grace over sin, and its reign through righteousness
Romans 5:20–21 NKJV
Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Paul expands on this thought by posing two rhetoric questions in verses 1 and 15 -
Romans 6:1 NKJV
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
Romans 6:15 NKJV
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!

Grace ends the rule of sin

Romans 6:1–2 NKJV
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?

Grace came to put an end to sin’s rule over the sinner’s life.

We are baptized into His death
Romans 6:3–4 NKJV
Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
water baptism signifies death or end to sin
We are united with Christ in His death and resurrection
Romans 6:5 NKJV
For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
united together with - joined with (Christ)
The “old man” has been crucified with Christ
Romans 6:6–7 NKJV
knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin.
be done away - to render inactive; to cease from action
Christ’s crucifixion signified the end of our bodies sinful activities
1 Peter 2:24 NKJV
who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
The new life in Christ is free from sin’s power and effect - death
Romans 6:8–9 NKJV
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.
In Christ’s death, the power of sin over us was stopped/has been disabled, because the ‘body of sin’ has been disabled/made inactive.
By Christ’s resurrection, the power of sin has no more rule over the same ‘body’, because it now belongs to God.
We (now) live to God
Romans 6:10–11 NKJV
For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
reckon - logizomai , to consider; to impute;
your body does not need to actually die to be dead to sin; the body of sin died with Christ on the cross.
Sin’s power can now be resisted!
Romans 6:12–14 NKJV
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
to resist sin is to refuse for your body to be used for sin’s unrighteous acts

Grace reigns through righteousness

Romans 6:15–16 NKJV
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?
The rule of the powers that be is evidenced by our obedience to their commands.
sin reigns when we continue to obey its command over our bodies
grace reigns because we now obey its instructions and will -
When we first heard the gospel that we heard
Romans 6:17 NKJV
But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
We are now slaves of righteousness
Romans 6:18–20 NKJV
And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.
slave of righteousness means -
servant of God
servant of Christ
John 8:34–36 NKJV
Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
slaves are labourers
body members are ‘implements’ of labor
slaves fight for their master
instruments - also means weapons
Colossians 3:5–7 NKJV
Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.
members on the earth -
when we practice sinful living, we are fighting against God’s will and purpose
The rule of the powers that be is evidenced by the fruits of their rule over your life.
Romans 6:21–22 NKJV
What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
sin’s rule produced death in our lives
death in the present
corruption
destruction
grace’s reign produces life
eternal life
manifestations of eternal life - holiness (sanctified living)
Romans 6:23 NKJV
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Conclusion

Believers in Christ are “not under law but under grace.”
Romans 6:14 NKJV
For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
What does it mean to be “under law”?
To be not under law means -
to be under the power of sin (ruled by sin)
to be under condemnation (because the law finds the sinner guilty)
What does it mean to be “under grace”?
To be under grace means -
to be free from the power of sin (because the sinner is now dead to sin)
to be free from condemnation (because grace imputes the righteousness of God to the believing sinner)
