“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
Acts 2:42

In v. 40 we see “with many other words.”
The Lord didn’t have Luke record all of Peter’s sermon but we can see that he pleaded with them to break away from tradition and rules they were accustomed to and to place their trust the Lord.
2. Tradition can be a wonderful thing, it can be something that was done in the past that can be looked back on with fondness.
However, tradition can also become an idol in the room that no one wants to talk about or against in fear of “being the bad guy.”
3. Today we need to remember that Jesus Christ is the sole head of the Church and the Bible is our sole authority for doctrine and practice in the Church.
It seems that every generation has to reclaim the truth for itself, more than likely because as human beings we allow our way of doing things to become our doctrine and practice without even noticing or questioning it.
4. Another reason is because we are at war continually and sometimes we just give in to the ways of the world, the flesh and the devil because it is the path of least resistance.
Especially when there is not a shepherd or the shepherd fails to feed, lead, protect and care for the flock.

And then sometimes we allow good things to get in the way of the greater good.
We find ourselves doing good things rather that doing what we are called to do as a Church.
Many generations in the past have had to turn away from idols and turn back to the Lord.
They have had to reclaim biblical truth for themselves and then practice it without thought of their lives.

The Bible calls for us to decide today whom we will serve and be devoted to.
(Josh 24:15; 1 Kings 18:21) To make it we must devote ourselves to the Word of God and the teaching and preaching of it.
7. Devoted is a word that most people won’t understand today because it commends loyalty, devotion and character.
Webster’s related words to it are “constant, faithful, loyal, true; thoughtful; fervid (passionate), zealous”
8. Notice that the early church devoted themselves to four things: (1) The Apostles Teaching.
We have to become a people that is devoted to Word of God.
Our top ministry priority is the teaching and preaching of God’s Word.
Without Bible truth no one ever becomes a Christian and no Christian ever grows.
(Matt 28:19-20)
9. (2) Fellowship.
We have to become a people devoted to fellowship (Koinonia) This refers to the mutual support of one another, giving of money, and other actions here in the local church.
10. (3) The Breaking of Bread.
We have to be a people that is devoted to the ordinances given to us by our Lord Jesus.
It specifically refers to the Lord’s Supper here, but definitely includes following the Lord in believers baptism as well.
11. (4) Prayer.
We have to be a people devoted to public or corporate prayer.
This includes the private prayer life of the believer but what most people don’t see is that the true Church is made up of people that are devoted to praying publicly.
So it is not enough for people just to pray at home by themselves, unless they also meet together to pray, which is in itself a profession of faith.
12. None of this applies to a person who is not a Christian.
Today if the Lord has spoken to you do not harden your heart, ask Jesus to save you from the wrath to come and become the Lord and Master of your life.

Above are four characteristics by which the true church can be judged.
Do we really seek to be like the true Church as it is pictured here?
If so, then it starts with devoting ourselves to becoming a throughly biblical church.

Ask yourself today, Where do I stand?
In a state of Lostness?
In Tradition?
Or in Christ?
Faith
True faith rests upon the character of God and asks no further proof than the moral perfections of the One who cannot lie.
