Writing to You Because
Sunday, April 27, 2008
"I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is
from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men, because
you have overcome the evil one.
I write to you, children,
because you know the Father."
(1 John 2:13, ESV)
1.
First John mentions the Fathers [Pateres].
These are the
believers with long and rich experiences.
They have come to
know and still know Him.
2. Him which is from the beginning.
The same clear
description of our Lord as has been described in the Gospel of
John 1:1-18 as well as in this epistle (1 John 1:1).
" In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All
things were made through him, and without him was not any
thing made that was made.
In him was life, and the life was the
light of men.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness
has not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God, whose
name was John.
He came as a witness, to bear witness about the
light, that all might believe through him.
He was not the light,
but came to bear witness about the light.
The true light, which
enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the
world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did
not know him.
He came to his own, and his own people did not
receive him.
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his
name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were
born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of
man, but of God.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among
us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from
the Father, full of grace and truth.
(John bore witness about
him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who
comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’
”)
And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came
through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God; the only God,
who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known."
(John
1:1-18, ESV)
" That which was from the beginning, which we have heard,
which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and
have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—" (1
John 1:1, ESV)
3. John declares that he is writing to you mature believers, who
have known Him and still know Him.
And He is working in
your life today as much as He was in the beginning of your
spiritual life to bring it to completion.
"for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for
his good pleasure."
(Philippians 2:13, ESV)
"And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you
will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ."
(Philippians 1:6, ESV)
4. Then John says he is writing to the Young Men [Neaniskoi].
These are the youth of the church.
They are full of vigor,
conflict and victory.
5.
He says they have "overcome the evil one."
This is a
permanent victory after a conflict [Nikao].
6.
It is the prince of darkness that is defeated in this struggle,
Very clearly does this verse speak to that defeat of Satan.
"Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the
devil has been sinning from the beginning.
The reason the Son
of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil."
(1 John
3:8, ESV)
"By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are
the children of the devil: whoever does not practice
righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love
his brother."
(1 John 3:10, ESV)
"You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your
father’s desires.
He was a murderer from the beginning, and has
nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar
and the father of lies."
(John 8:44, ESV)
