"At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining."

How is the old commandment a new commandment?
The word new in the original suggests that the old has given birth to the new.
The old does not cease to exist but continues along with the new.
2. The law of love is new becuase it is seen in Jesus and established by him through his death and resurrection.
(John 13:34; John 15:12; 1 John 3:23; 2 John 5)
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”"

7. The Christian rule of love is a new command because believers’ ability to love one another is motivated by their love for Christ, who first loved them.
Believers are able to love even their enemies because they realize that Christ loved them when they were his enemies.

With this new commandment a new era has begun.
Jesus Christ, the Light of the World (John 8:12), has come to destroy the darkness of sin and death and to bring the Kingdom of God, which is characterized by light and love.
" Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”"

The darkness is passing away is a reference to everything controled by the evil one.

The true light of Christ is already shining in every one of His children.
However, every believer's faith has its dawn before it reaches noonday.
We don't become wise on the first day as much as we should be.
Even Paul said that he labored to apprehend what he had not yet obtained.
(Phil 3:12-14)
" Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own.
But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."
