True in Him and in You
Sunday, March 16, 2008
"At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining."
(1 John 2:8, ESV)
1.
How is the old commandment a new commandment?
The word new in the original suggests that the old has given birth to the new.
The old does not cease to exist but continues along with the new.
2. The law of love is new becuase it is seen in Jesus and established by him through his death and resurrection.
(John 13:34; John 15:12; 1 John 3:23; 2 John 5)
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”"
(John 13:34-35, ESV)
"“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you."
(John 15:12, ESV)
"And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us."
(1 John 3:23, ESV)
"And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another."
(2 John 5, ESV)
3. First, in Jesus, love became new in the extent to which it reached.
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”"
(Matthew 28:19-20, ESV)
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”"
(Acts 1:8, ESV)
4. Second, in Jesus love became new in “the lengths to which it would go.”
5. Third, in Jesus love is made new in “the degree to which it is realized.”
6.
The love commandment was old, always part of God’s word (Deut 6:5 and Lev 19:18, cited by Jesus—Mk 12:30–31), but also new, based on a new and ultimate example (Jn 13:34).
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”"
(John 13:34-35, ESV)
7. The Christian rule of love is a new command because believers’ ability to love one another is motivated by their love for Christ, who first loved them.
Believers are able to love even their enemies because they realize that Christ loved them when they were his enemies.
"For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life."
(Romans 5:10, ESV)
"We love because he first loved us."
(1 John 4:19, ESV)
"In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."
(1 John 4:10, ESV)
8.
With this new commandment a new era has begun.
Jesus Christ, the Light of the World (John 8:12), has come to destroy the darkness of sin and death and to bring the Kingdom of God, which is characterized by light and love.
" Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”"
(John 8:12, ESV)
9.
The darkness is passing away is a reference to everything controled by the evil one.
(kosmos - this world system - 1 John 2:15-17)
" Do not love the world or the things in the world.
If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.
And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever."
(1 John 2:15-17, ESV)
10.
The true light of Christ is already shining in every one of His children.
However, every believer's faith has its dawn before it reaches noonday.
We don't become wise on the first day as much as we should be.
Even Paul said that he labored to apprehend what he had not yet obtained.
(Phil 3:12-14)
" Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own.
But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."
(Philippians 3:12-14, ESV)
11.
The progression of thought is that if a person knows God, he will keep God’s commandments, and that if he keeps God’s commandments, he will love others in accord with Christ’s teaching.
