Olympic Disqualification

Kumite - Gold Medal match
Saudi v. Iran
Saudi was clearly favored
fast, sharp, fit
knockout kick
DQ b/c kick was too hard
UNFAIR OR LACK OF DISCIPLINE IN A SPORT that demands DISCIPLINE
The heart break of knowing gold was in your grasp and then it slipped away with a drop of your guard...
Emotions and the intensity of key moments in life can get the best of us and DQ us from a myriad of things in life
Cheating on exam/assignment ---> fail the assignment/class
Anger or addictive habits ---> loose a relationship
lazy and passive ---> loose a promotion…decreased satisfaction
lie to our spouses ---> loss of trust
Worst disqualification is when we disqualify ourselves from being ambassadors of the gospel
Most frequently, its in the little things that DQ from being successful ambassadors
Not careful with our language at work
gossiping about co-workers
loosing our temp with customer service
acting rudely with store clerk
giving a lesson to your Sunday school kids but conducting yourself poorly in front of them outside of class
Putting ourselves in compromising situations with friends and then not speaking up during a conversation about religion because you realize you have no ground to speak from, because there was no difference between your behavior from your friends

St. Paul and Disqualification

St Paul was so concerned about DQ himself as a messenger/ambassador of the gospel that he withheld himself from any of the rightful benefits of being an apostle
1 Corinthians 9:14–15 NKJV
14 Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel. 15 But I have used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should be done so to me; for it would be better for me to die than that anyone should make my boasting void.
St. Paul is very clear that his priority is to make sure that the message of the gospel is not disregarded because of anything he did
1 Corinthians 9:18 (NKJV)
18 What is my reward then? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge, that I may not abuse my authority in the gospel.
St. Paul was keenly aware that his conduct was essential for two reasons
Preaching and bringing people to Christ is hard enough...”win some”...
Living my life without spiritual discipline can disqualify me from my own salvation.
1 Corinthians 9:27 NKJV
27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
The life we are called to as ambassadors of the gospel, is challenging and full of failures…but we must see the see the challenges and continually discipline ourselves to get better only with the help of the HS
1 Peter 3:9–11 (NKJV)
9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit. 11 Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it.

Parable of the wicked Vine dressers

Explain parable
Vinedressers are the Jews…God’s chosen people
they neglected their responsibility
became greedy and prideful
The son is Jesus Christ…who was rejected by the Jews and killed
Luke 20:15 NKJV
15 So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
The ultimate DQ
Luke 20:16 NASB95
16 “He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others.” When they heard it, they said, “May it never be!”
When we leave ourselves unchecked, undisciplined, without accountability two key things happen
We can DQ ourselves as messengers of the Gospel
We can DQ ourselves from from eternal life
Which is why we emphasize the importance of spiritual practices....Spiritual athleticism … Ascetism
1 Corinthians 9:24 NKJV
24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.
