Driving in a storm

Storms have a way of always catching us off guard

Transition: Maybe you have experienced this in your own life.

WE

It’s a beautiful day at the beach then all of the sudden
Wasn’t predicted (Meteorologist joke)
Introduce Series

When we connect our lives with God and His power…nothing is impossible!

Transition: The Bible gives us many examples of this through the miracles of Jesus.

GOD

Matthew 8:23–27 NLT
23 Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. 24 Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. 27 The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!”
Background of the Story
We all get to that point
Where are you God? Don’t you care?
Transition: Jesus wants to teach his disciples and us some things about storms that we all need to remember.

YOU

1. Sometimes we are led into the storm

The storm was part of the plan (Jesus led the way)
Hebrews 12:11 NLT
11 No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.
Fatherly discipline
It’s not my job to keep bad things from happening to them
They have free will

Sometimes the most loving thing that God can do is lead us into a storm

2. Don’t mistake inaction for indifference

Storms don’t mean He doesn’t care, storms serve as reminders that He is in control
Romans 8:35–39 NLT
35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Not all storms are meant to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path

Jesus rebuked the disciples before he rebuked the storm
The problem wasn’t the storm (outside storm) it was their lack of faith (inside storm)
Hebrews 11:1 NLT
1 Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.
What is going on inside of you that is causing a lack of faith?

3. His presence is greater than any of my problems

Children’s lessons (songs)
Transition: Wouldn’t it be great if we all started to look at our storms in a different way

WE

What if instead of looking at our storms as obstacles, we looked at them as opportunities?
