The Purpose of God’s Pursuit

From Genesis to Exodus, the pursuit of God is seen as He comes after His people
Why did the Lord save the people from captivity in Egypt?
Exodus 5:1–3 NIV
Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.’ ” Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.” Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword.”
The Lord delivered the people not to take them to the promised land. He brought them out of Egypt to worship Him. His great gift since the beginning has been Himself.
Abraham knew this as the Lord proclaimed to him that He was the great reward.
Genesis 15:1 NIV
After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”

God with Us

Exodus 25:1–22 NIV
The Lord said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from everyone whose heart prompts them to give. These are the offerings you are to receive from them: gold, silver and bronze; blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen; goat hair; ram skins dyed red and another type of durable leather; acacia wood; olive oil for the light; spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense; and onyx stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod and breastpiece. “Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them. Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you. “Have them make an ark of acacia wood—two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. Overlay it with pure gold, both inside and out, and make a gold molding around it. Cast four gold rings for it and fasten them to its four feet, with two rings on one side and two rings on the other. Then make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. Insert the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry it. The poles are to remain in the rings of this ark; they are not to be removed. Then put in the ark the tablets of the covenant law, which I will give you. “Make an atonement cover of pure gold—two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide. And make two cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover. Make one cherub on one end and the second cherub on the other; make the cherubim of one piece with the cover, at the two ends. The cherubim are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover. Place the cover on top of the ark and put in the ark the tablets of the covenant law that I will give you. There, above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the covenant law, I will meet with you and give you all my commands for the Israelites.
The Lord has ratified a covenant with His people. As Fred spoke about last week, it was not a contractual covenant but rather a relational covenant. So now we see God immediately respond by fulfilling His end of the covenant and pursuing His people once again.
The Lord commissions His people to gather the supplies needs to construct His dwelling place among His people. Just pause for a moment and see the significance of this moment. Since Adam and Eve left the garden, the position of the Lord in regards to His creation has been distant. God shows up on the scene at times, but His dwelling place is not amongst His creation. He dwells on high. But now, the Lord is setting up His dwelling place once again amongst His creation.
He begins with the throne upon which He will sit amongst His people.
When they would come to worship, they would do so before the throne of the Lord. When they came to make amends for their sins, they would do so before the throne of the Lord. When they faced battle, they would do so following the throne of the Lord. When they felt lost in the wilderness, they would just have to look at the cloud that consumed the tabernacle in the middle of their camp and be reminded that God was with them.
Isaiah 63:11 NIV
Then his people recalled the days of old, the days of Moses and his people— where is he who brought them through the sea, with the shepherd of his flock? Where is he who set his Holy Spirit among them,
Romans 8:5–11 NIV
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
