*If Anyone Has the World's Goods* - \\

"But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?"

(1 John 3:17, ESV)

*1.

*We must define the families before we define the siblings.

When we talk about "brother or sister" it is always in the context of children of God.

\\ \\ \\ " While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him.

But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”

And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!

For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”"

(Matthew 12:46-50, ESV)

"And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.”

And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?”

And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!

For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”"

(Mark 3:32-35, ESV)

" Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd.

And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.”

But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”"

(Luke 8:19-21, ESV)

*We are called to lay down our lives for the brothers if need be and to put others before ourselves and John goes even further and says "If anyone has the world's goods."

This gives the believers an opportunity to show their love for one another.

*"If anyone has the world's goods" is a statement that shows that some Christians will have wealth in this world.

Wealth in itself is not sinful but it is what they do with this wealth that they will give an account for.

\\ \\ \\ "As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.

They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life."

(1 Timothy 6:17-19, ESV)

*Having the world's goods has always brought responsibility from the Old Testament to the New.

\\ \\ \\ "“If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be.

Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the Lord against you, and you be guilty of sin.

You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake.

For there will never cease to be poor in the land.

Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’"

(Deuteronomy 15:7-11, ESV)

*Our giving is to supply the needs of the saints and is used for God's glory.

\\ \\ \\ "So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for the gift you have promised, so that it may be ready as a willing gift, not as an exaction.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.

You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.

By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission flowing from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you.

Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!" (2 Corinthians 9:5-15, ESV)

*Our giving should not be used for anothers ease and our burden - but instead it should be fair among all the saints.

\\ \\ \\ "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it.

So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have.

For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.

For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness.

As it is written, “Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”"

*We show our Love for God by loving our brothers and this means looking out for their needs if necessary.

If one of our own is in trouble - we take care of them!

\\ \\ \\ "If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen."

(1 John 4:20, ESV)

" Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him."

(1 John 5:1, ESV)

"If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?

So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."

(James 2:15-17, ESV)

*"Closes his heart against him" lit means to "close the bowels" and it is a person who has no compassion for his brothers or sisters.

*"How does God's love abide in him?" - Clearly it doesn't.
