Review

What spiritual gifts are not
They are not natural talents and skills
They are not the fruit of the Spirit
They are not Christian roles

This Part

How the spiritual gifts operate in the church.

Different Gifts, Different Ministries

1 Corinthians 12:4–5 NKJV
4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
Based on our Bible references, we can group the gifts under three categories according to their benefits in the body of Christ.
all gifts contribute to the edifying and growth of the body, but some have specific purposes and strengths.

Equipping Gifts

Apostle
Prophet
Evangelist
Pastor
Teacher
Ephesians 4:11–12 NKJV
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
Importance Functions of Equipping gifts

Paul’s prayer
Ephesians 1:16–19 NKJV
16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power

they provide healing for the sick
they offer their lives for the benefit of others
Example
The first “deacons”
Acts 6:5–7 NKJV
5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6 whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. 7 Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

they boost the faith of others

Examples
Philip’s ministry in Samaria
Acts 8:5–8 NKJV
5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. 6 And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city.

Different Gifts, Different Activities

1 Corinthians 12:6 NKJV
6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
Each gift operates under different levels of strength.
Romans 12:3 NKJV
3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
God appoints to us according to the measure of faith
1 Peter 4:11 NKJV
11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
God supplies the ability (strength) to operate the gift in us

2 Corinthians 10:13–17 NKJV
13 We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere which God appointed us—a sphere which especially includes you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves (as though our authority did not extend to you), for it was to you that we came with the gospel of Christ; 15 not boasting of things beyond measure, that is, in other men’s labors, but having hope, that as your faith is increased, we shall be greatly enlarged by you in our sphere, 16 to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s sphere of accomplishment. 17 But “he who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”
Examples
pastors do not discipline another’s flock, although they can warn or admonish
Apostles have their own area of operation
some teachers influence only children, others young and old
some leaders lead members, others lead other leaders
