Introduction

Review a history of obedience to God and disobedience to God.

Examples:

OT = obey = “listen to the voice of...”
Genesis 27:5–10 NASB95
5 Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game to bring home, 6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Behold, I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, saying, 7 ‘Bring me some game and prepare a savory dish for me, that I may eat, and bless you in the presence of the Lord before my death.’ 8 “Now therefore, my son, listen to me as I command you. 9 “Go now to the flock and bring me two choice young goats from there, that I may prepare them as a savory dish for your father, such as he loves. 10 “Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.”

#1

Genesis 2:16–17 NASB95
16 The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
Genesis 1:16–17 BHS/WHM 4.2
This is the original command from God to man.
If they obey = continue to live into eternity.
If they disobey = they will die and not live into eternity.

#2

Genesis 6:11–13 NASB95
11 Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth. 13 Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.
Genesis 6:11–13 BHS/WHM 4.2
cf:
2 Peter 2:4–5 NASB95
4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; 5 and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;

Deuteronomy 28:1 NASB95
1 “Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the Lord your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.
Deuteronomy 28:1 BHS/WHM 4.2
cf.
Deuteronomy 28:15 NASB95
15 “But it shall come about, if you do not obey the Lord your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:
Deuteronomy 28:15 BHS/WHM 4.2
The emphasis that is placed upon obedience in Scripture cannot be overstated.
Why is this?
Ultimately, it comes down to the nature of God.
It is the nature of God to obey as a concept.
The Foundation of Obedience
The Expression of Obedience
The Benefit of Obedience

V. 17

John 13:17 NAS
“If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
John 13:17 UBS5

The Foundation of Obedience

“If you know these things…”

John 13:17 (WPNT): If ye know (εἰ οἰδατε [ei oidate]). Condition of first class assumed as true, εἰ [ei] and present (οἰδατε [oidate] used as present) active indicative. If ye do (ἐαν ποιητε [ean poiēte]). Third-class condition, ἐαν [ean] and present active subjunctive, assumed as possible, “if ye keep on doing.” Both conditions with the one conclusion coming in between, “happy are ye.” Just knowing does not bring happiness nor just occasional doing.”
First class condition = assumed as true, as far as the statement goes.
John 13:13 NAS
“You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.
But what exactly does Jesus mean by this?
Let’s think this through.
First, Jesus is in a discussion with these men based upon His example of washing the feet of His disciples.
What should these men know?

“….these things…”

Plural
Possibly
Jesus is Teacher and Lord - v.13
Jesus washed their feet as an example - v.14
A slave is lesser than his master - v. 16

The Expression of Obedience

“…you do them (these things)…”

Now, the know of “these things” and the doing of them is in view.
“do” = to perform, manufacture.
What are they supposed to “do”?
They are to do what they “know” in part A.
What do they know?
The use of that word in context is found in v. 12:
John 13:12 NAS
So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?
Hebrews 11:1–3 NASB95
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the men of old gained approval. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.
ILLUSTRATION:
Genesis 22:1–18 NASB95
1 Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance. 5 Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.” 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. 7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together. 9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” 13 Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son. 14 Abraham called the name of that place The Lord Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the Lord it will be provided.” 15 Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven, 16 and said, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
Tested obedience:
Genesis 22:1 NASB95
1 Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
Isaac = his only son
Genesis 22:2 NASB95
2 He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.”
Your only son, whom you love..
Go where I will tell you....
Sacrifice:
Genesis 22:9–10 NASB95
9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

The Benefit of Obedience

Jesus had asked them if they “know what I have done?”
“Do you know the significance of my actions?”
Therefore, Jesus is saying that if they understand the significance of His action in washing the saints’ feet, and the attendant shame that went with it, AND they do the same in turn, THEY ARE/WILL BE BLESSED!
What does it mean to be blessed?
The word appears 50 times in the New Testament.
But, the idea of blessed is not quite what people might think.
The word has a variety of uses but when you're talking about things pertaining to the kingdom of God, the idea of blessing Will not be the same thing as blessing in this life.
Let me give you an example.
Matthew 5:3–12 NASB95
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
You can see you there that the word blessed is used.
But if you look at the ideas of what makes a person blessed, they are not at all appealing to the world.
For example, blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn, blessed are the gentle or meek, blessed are those who crave righteousness, blessed are the merciful, blessed are the pure in heart, blessed are the peacemakers, blessed are the persecuted for the sake of righteousness, and blessed are the insulted.
Does that sound appealing to you?
If you want to be blessed, you must be poor in spirit, morning, gentle, hungering for righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, a peacemaker, persecuted, and insulted.
Jesus said that being blessed is a result of these things.
Matthew 11:6 NASB95
6 “And blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.”
According to this verse, someone who is blessed is someone who is not offended at Jesus Christ.
That means that they are not offended, or or you might say ashamed, at who Jesus Christ is or what he has said.
The claims of Jesus Christ are a shame to those who are offended at him.
Jesus said that those people Will not be blessed.
However, those who are not ashamed of Jesus Christ are blessed.
What does it mean to be blessed?
It means that you are in a good position with God.
That however does not mean that you are rich, healthy, and happy in this life.
The measurement of what it means to be blessed is measured by God himself.
1 Timothy 6:13–16 NASB95
13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which He will bring about at the proper time—He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.

Conclusion

2 Peter 3:17–18 NASB95
17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
John 6:37–38 NASB95
37 “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. 38 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Jesus’ will was to do the will of the Father.
This does not mean that He had no will of His own.
He did.
If He did not, He could not have chosen to do the will of the Father.
Therefore, Jesus was evidently not a robot or automaton who had no will of His own or expression of His own desires.
Matthew 26:36–42 NASB95
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.” 39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 “Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.”
For example:
Hebrews 5:8–9 NASB95
8 Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. 9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
Hebrews 5:8–9 UBS5
When Jesus was put into the context of obedience and disobedience, He chose obedience.
His obedience was a direct result of His suffering.
From His suffering for the sake of righteousness, He learned how to remain obedient to the Father.
Examine the blessing of obedience.
