Intro

In the 1920’s, a young opera singer named Laritz Melchior was practicing in the garden at his home in Munich. As he sang the words, “Come to me, my love, on the wings of light,” a female parachutist landed at his feet. It was the German actress Maria Hacker, who was performing a stunt for an upcoming movie. They were married 5 years later. Melchior said, “She came to me from heaven”

Conversation with Mike (Do biblical miracles still happen?)
Think of how you feel when you see someone paralyzed that can suddenly walk?
When you hear that someone has been fully cured of cancer?
How does it make you feel if someone says they were dead and came back to life?

We often are guilty of questioning a miracle instead of questioning our skepticism

What is a miracle?

Dictionary definition
A surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency
A miracle is an interference with nature by a supernatural power.
(C.S. Lewis)
In other words

Miracles don’t make sense to us because it they are not humanly possible

Transition: To set the stage for the rest of the series, we are going to look at one of the most popular miracles that Jesus performed and learn some things that we can apply to our own lives.

Bible

Mark 6:35–37 NLT
35 Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. 36 Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat.” 37 But Jesus said, “You feed them.” “With what?” they asked. “We’d have to work for months to earn enough money to buy food for all these people!”
The title of this sermon is “Do Something”
Look at your neighbor and tell them “Do Something”
I’ve read this scripture many times but what sticks out to me this time is that Jesus says, You feed them.
The original Greek text is even stronger because it translates to “You yourselves get them something to eat”
That same phrasing can be found in telling of this miracle in Matthew, Mark, and Luke
Why would Jesus say that?
Was he tired? Frustrated with the disciples?

Jesus furnished the miracle…they furnished the hands

Jesus wanted them to be a part of the miracle
He didn’t want them to sit around and wonder what they could do
He wanted them to use the resources that they had available to them
He wanted them to do something

Application

I believe what Jesus is trying to teach them is the same thing that he has been showing me the past couple of weeks.

You can’t be spiritually mature if you are not emotionally healthy

Tell personal story
Apologies (Board & Family)

What You Can Do For Others

1) Stop Saying, “If there is anything I can do, let me know.”

There is always something you can do and chances are you know it
James 2:15–16 NLT
15 Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, 16 and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?
The better thing to do is to ask God, “Show me how to use my gifts to help and encourage this person.”

2) Do for one person what you wish you could do for everyone

Often times we don’t do nothing because we think that if we do something for someone then everyone is going to expect the same thing
Personal example (Birthdays and Anniversaries)

3) Practice the ministry of presence

Often times the best thing we can provide is a listening ear and a hug

What You Can Do For Our Church

1) Don’t expect everyone else to have the same passion for something that you do

2) If you something is bothering you, realize that God may be calling you to do something about it

Broken replaced
Common complaints
Suggestion Box (Sunday morning before I preach)
2 rules
Be willing to put your name on it
Be willing to help do something about it

What You Can Do For Yourself

1) Don’t say “yes” to something when you should say “no”

When you say yes to something, you are always saying no to something else (and it’s usually your family)
You don’t have to be at everything
If you are tired and complaining about being there, then maybe you shouldn’t be there
No doesn’t mean no forever.
If you say yes then be committed and don’t back out at the last minute, come prepared, and be on time

2) Stop saying “I’m fine” when you are not

Saying your fine when your not is lying and lying is a sin

Feeling Insecure Neurotic & Emotional

3) Don’t make any life altering decisions when your tank is emotionally empty

4) Find a skilled neutral person to provide wise counsel

What This Looks Like For Me (How You Can Help?)

1) God - Family - Church

Office Hours (Slide)

Phone will be off from 8pm to 8am and all day on Friday
Saturday (Emergencies Only)

2) Care more about what God thinks about me than what people think about me

3) Start healing the wounds of the past that are draining my emotional health

Challenge

If you want to see a miracle, then do something

Have you been faithful in sharing the resources that God has blessed you with?
How is your emotional health?
Is there something that you can do for someone right now that you have been putting off?
