Mark 8:34–37 ESV
34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul?
Thesis:
The destiny of the soul of man has been placed squarely within his responsibility.
Introduction:
For some the discussion of the immaterial makes no sense.
Without physical, empirical evidence, a significant portion of our population (both past and present) will not be convinced of the existence of the soul of mankind.
Yet the most widely read and published book of all time is clear in it’s teaching that man has a soul. The soul is immaterial and very real.
Scripture is also clear that man (being a creature with free will) is responsible for his own soul.
Our Bible also admonishes us that the maintenance of our souls is best provided by the ultimate instruction guide which is the Word of God.
[Let’s begin by looking at the beginning of the human soul…]

Humans have a Soul

As God’s chosen people were wandering in the wilderness for 40 years (1410-1450 B.C.), the Holy Spirit inspired His servant Moses to write down the beginning narrative of man.
Therefore, it is revealed to us early by God through Moses that man has a soul.
Genesis 2:7 ESV
7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

This reality of the human soul is carried out by many in our Bible.
The Psalmist speaks of our creator...
Psalm 100:3 ESV
3 Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
The Psalmist continues his writing...
Psalm 119:81 ESV
81 My soul longs for your salvation; I hope in your word.
The Prophet Zechariah confirms that it was God who formed man...
Zechariah 12:1 ESV
1 The oracle of the word of the Lord concerning Israel: Thus declares the Lord, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him:
[Many verses confirm the human soul and teaches that we carry responsibility for it…]

Humans are responsible for their Soul

let’s notice two things about our text...
The complexity and depth of the soul
Human responsibility for the soul and to obey God
Mark 8:34–38 (ESV)
34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
Mark up verses 2 times with pencil showing
showing psyche every time it is translated
showing how many times man is responsible for doing something
John 12:26 ESV
26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
Service is doing for Jesus, and those who do for Jesus are accepting responsibility for what needs to be done for the Gospel and his soul.
Acts 20:24 ESV
24 But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.
Paul speaks about his responsibilities in according to his soul (life)
[The best thing humans can do for their souls is to provide it the Word of God…]

Jesus Words are the Manna the Soul needed

Jesus says something interesting in verse 38
Mark 8:38 (ESV)
38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
Jesus is letting us know that the Power to save is found in His Word...
Romans 1:16 ESV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
This Gospel is for everyone
Past, Present, and Future
All Nations, All Peoples
Jesus gave us the Word and uniquely is the Word...
John 6:35 ESV
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
the uniqueness of Jesus as the Word is seen in the Gospel of John
John 1:1–5 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Conclusion:
There is such a thing as the soul
Humans have a soul, and are responsible for it’s maintenance, and it’s consequences
We must feed/ maintain the soul with the Word of God
