Introduction

A young man, who was to return home and be married, came sooner than was expected. He did not notify his bride-to-be of the exact time. He desired to please her with a surprise. He loved her devotedly and had worked hard and saved his earnings in order to purchase a home for her. It was about midnight when he arrived, but, with a happy heart, he felt he must go by her home. However, when he came near he saw the house was all lighted up. As he came nearer he heard music. Still nearer he saw dancing. Finally looking through the window he saw his bride-to-be in the embrace of another man. His heart sank within him and he went away never to return.
I start off with that story because there is a day coming when Jesus Christ is coming to get His “bride”, the church. We don’t know when, but the day of the Lord’s return could be any time. Let me ask, if Jesus came today, where would He find His professed bride? Or put the question another way, if Jesus came today, where would He find us who professor to be His followers? Will we be dancing with the world? Will our sinful nature cause us to forget about Him? Will we be rejoicing of His return?
In the final section of Peter’s letter, he will be encouraging us as believers to hold on to the promises of the Lord and remind us that God’s patience gives us an opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 3:1–13 CSB
Dear friends, this is now the second letter I have written to you; in both letters, I want to stir up your sincere understanding by way of reminder, so that you recall the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the command of our Lord and Savior given through your apostles. Above all, be aware of this: Scoffers will come in the last days scoffing and following their own evil desires, saying, “Where is his ‘coming’ that he promised? Ever since our ancestors fell asleep, all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation.” They deliberately overlook this: By the word of God the heavens came into being long ago and the earth was brought about from water and through water. Through these the world of that time perished when it was flooded. By the same word, the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. Dear friends, don’t overlook this one fact: With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed. Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness as you wait for the day of God and hasten its coming. Because of that day, the heavens will be dissolved with fire and the elements will melt with heat. But based on his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
(Prayer)
I’ve divided the teaching into four sections, the first called “Remember”.

Remember (Verses 1-2):

2 Peter 3:1–2 CSB
Dear friends, this is now the second letter I have written to you; in both letters, I want to stir up your sincere understanding by way of reminder, so that you recall the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the command of our Lord and Savior given through your apostles.
Key Words: “Stir Up”, “Sincere Understanding”, “Recall”
Peter gives us his reasoning on why he wrote this letter. He doesn’t want followers of Jesus to forget the promises of the Lord Jesus that have been spoken about from the beginning to now.
Why?!

Scoffers (Verses 3-7):

2 Peter 3:3–7 CSB
Above all, be aware of this: Scoffers will come in the last days scoffing and following their own evil desires, saying, “Where is his ‘coming’ that he promised? Ever since our ancestors fell asleep, all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation.” They deliberately overlook this: By the word of God the heavens came into being long ago and the earth was brought about from water and through water. Through these the world of that time perished when it was flooded. By the same word, the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
Scoffer: the act of mocking or ridiculing.
Examples of Scoffers:
Mocking The Prophets:
Isaiah 5:19 CSB
to those who say, “Let him hurry up and do his work quickly so that we can see it! Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel take place so that we can know it!”
Ezekiel 12:21–28 CSB
Again the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, what is this proverb you people have about the land of Israel, which goes, ‘The days keep passing by, and every vision fails’? Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: I will put a stop to this proverb, and they will not use it again in Israel.’ But say to them, ‘The days have arrived, as well as the fulfillment of every vision. For there will no longer be any false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel. But I, the Lord, will speak whatever message I will speak, and it will be done. It will no longer be delayed. For in your days, rebellious house, I will speak a message and bring it to pass. This is the declaration of the Lord God.’ ” The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, notice that the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees concerns many years from now; he prophesies about distant times.’ Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: None of my words will be delayed any longer. The message I speak will be fulfilled. This is the declaration of the Lord God.’ ”
Scoffers desire mocking the Lord and His followers. Out of their desire though, they miss the truth of who God is.
Psalm 33:6 CSB
The heavens were made by the word of the Lord, and all the stars, by the breath of his mouth.
There will be judgement for their actions. (Example: Noah)
2 Thessalonians 1:9–10 CSB
They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction from the Lord’s presence and from his glorious strength on that day when he comes to be glorified by his saints and to be marveled at by all those who have believed, because our testimony among you was believed.
Judgement day is coming, but everyday Judgement day isn’t here, we are experiencing the patience and love of the Lord.

God’s Patience (Verses 8-9):

2 Peter 3:8–9 CSB
Dear friends, don’t overlook this one fact: With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance.
“God’s timing isn’t our timing.”
Psalm 90:4 CSB
For in your sight a thousand years are like yesterday that passes by, like a few hours of the night.
God doesn’t want anyone to perish, that is why He is being patient.
Isaiah 30:18 CSB
Therefore the Lord is waiting to show you mercy, and is rising up to show you compassion, for the Lord is a just God. All who wait patiently for him are happy.
1 Timothy 2:1–4 CSB
First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
“God desires all to be saved, but that doesn’t mean all will be saved.”
The Day of the Lord (Verses 10-13):
2 Peter 3:10–13 CSB
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed. Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness as you wait for the day of God and hasten its coming. Because of that day, the heavens will be dissolved with fire and the elements will melt with heat. But based on his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
No One Knows When Jesus Is Coming Back
Matthew 24:36–43 CSB
“Now concerning that day and hour no one knows—neither the angels of heaven nor the Son—except the Father alone. As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. For in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah boarded the ark. They didn’t know until the flood came and swept them all away. This is the way the coming of the Son of Man will be. Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. Two women will be grinding grain with a hand mill; one will be taken and one left. Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. But know this: If the homeowner had known what time the thief was coming, he would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken into.
Until His return, we are to share in the blessed hope.
Titus 2:11–15 CSB
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people for his own possession, eager to do good works. Proclaim these things; encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
Judgement comes to all. For those who harden their hearts from the Lord will be separated from God for the rest of eternity in hell. For those who have hearts surrender to the Lord, they will enjoy the glory of Christ and His new creation.
Encourage reading Isaiah 66 and Revelation 21.
