The Narrow Gate

Read Luke 16:19-31
The best commentary on scripture is scripture. Before we dive into Luke I would like to start with Matthew 7:13-14.
Narrow gate- their is only one gate and no room for error getting into heaven.
Life is like a long plane ride that takes constant attention. Death is landing on the runway of eternity. When we reach there and are off by a degree the consequences are going up in flame. One mistake put you off course. Just like a plane taking off and being off by one degree from California to Hawaii you are going to end up crashing into the ocean about 40 miles from shore. Hawaii is a small target but he follows his radar and has studied his training manual. We must listen to the Holy Spirit and study our training manual, the Bible. or else we will fall short(Romans 3:23)
John 14:6- Jesus is the only way to be saved and as true believers we should have a desire to strive to live up to his Words (2 Timothy 3:16)
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Narrow path requires surrender, surrendering your life to Christ (Matthew 16:24-25)
discipline to live according to God’s moral standard
Wide gate- the path to hell is an easy one
ignore Christ and his words and you will be rolling down the wrong path
Many in our communities are on this path blinded by the idol of wealth (Matthew 19:23-24)
Matthew 19:23–24 ESV
And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”
We see the rich man partying it up, he was living in illusion of “heaven”
For those going to hell this is the best it will ever be
Sin and false religions are tools of the devil to keep you on the broad path
Rich man vs. Lazarus on this earth
Rich man
wealthy
stingy (fail the second greatest commandment [Mark 12:31])
prideful
Lazarus
poor
wanting of very little
humble
Does wealth keep you out of heaven? No (for example David was wealthy as king)
extra tempting idol, we just have to show an extra level of guarding ourselves against the love of money
1 Timothy 6:10- love of money is root of evils
1 Timothy 6:10 ESV
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Luke 12:48- much is given much is required
Exodus 20:17- don't get lost in a comparison game

Reality of Hell

It is no debating it, Hell will be a place of torment (v. 23)
weeping and gnashing- Matthew 13:41-42
Recognize goodness but cannot feel it
Rich man could see how Lazarus was blessed, but could no longer experience any blessing of God’s
Feels one with regret
Recognize people
Rich man recognized faces of those he knew and some he didn’t know on this earth
no joyous reunions, no finding your drinking buddies to party it up
Regret for playing a part in leading some astray
Memories
earthly memories can remain. Rich man remembers his brothers and their physical state
No water (relief)
rich man wanted some relief by water, but none was granted
Mercy will not be shown
no relief for all eternity
Fire
will be inflicting torment eternally (Revelation 20:9-14)
Recognizes the power of the gospel
this recognizance comes too late though
regret your example may lead others in your steps
you know people need to be saved
Realization of the finality of your condition
you recognize the power of the gospel but that it is too late for you, your eternity was sealed upon your final breathe on earth

Reality of Heaven

Fellowship
with people you recognize
Needs are met
water is there
Resurrected bodies
1 Corinthians 15:42- no more bodies full of ailments or that let us down o die. perfect pain free bodies
1 Corinthians 15:42 ESV
So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable.
No weeping
Revelation 7:17- The hurt physical and mental will be gone
Revelation 7:17 ESV
For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Eternity Minded

Eternity Minded
Realize your actions today have eternal impact.
You do not set the terms of eternity. You cannot pick and choose what you want of the Bible
Are you saved?
Yes then Heaven is in your eternity
No then the torture of hellfire
Being a good ole boy or girl will not get you into heaven, neither will your parents or grandparents. Grow up and make the right decision and commit your life to Christ
