HOOK

Talk a little bit about infidelity— Swing—
Based on a report from the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women in 2009, marital infidelity is one of the major causes of stress among Filipino couples
40% of men engaging in extramarital affairs— 40% increase in the last decade— 22 cases of annulment filed daily
Impact of social media to infidelity— AshleyMadison.Com— With its tagline "Life is short. Have an Affair."
An online dating site for married men and women, called AshleyMadison.com, is offering an alternative and unconventional approach to strengthening the marriage. Established in 2002 in Canada, the site is now currently in 43 countries, in 24 different languages and have over 30 million members around the world, with one person signing up every six seconds.
The Web site started its Asian expansion last year, now operating in Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and India, which they recently launched. Last year, the Web site came to the Philippines.
"Philippines is long overdue. We think Philippines will be one of our most successful international markets for several reasons. For one, we have studied its economic growth for the last 10 years. Two, it is the 12th most popular tourist destination in the world. Three, it is considered a conservative society with strong Catholic heritage," shared Kraemer.— Christoph Kraemer, the site's spokesman.
"Based on our experience, socially conservative countries tend to do very well. We are doing quite well in Catholic countries such as Spain, Brazil, Italy, among others. I think it goes back to the story of Adam and Eve and the apple. The more norms and rules exist, more people [are] tempted to taste the forbidden fruit."
He shared based on their recent survey on religion and infidelity, "Catholics are most adventurous in the bedroom. The reason they gave us? The next morning, they can always go to the confession and everything will be forgiven."
Kraemer shared that the international demographics: "Ninety percent of the male members are married, aged between 42 to 45, and mostly entrepreneurs. They are mostly working in the finance, marketing and sales sectors. For female, two-thirds are married and aged 30 to 35.
Although it is the smallest, Kramer finds the third group of single women quite fascinating. "I call them the vocational mistress. They don't want to be the girlfriend or wife because they don't want to wash the dirty laundry, do the dishes and go grocery shopping, They want to be taken to a nice restaurant or a luxurious escapade to Paris for Valentine's or Christmas. Men tend to spend three times as much on their mistress than their wives. These single women are quite fulfilled, happy and content being the proverbial other woman."
So, what happens when the other spouse learns about the affair?
"We have been operating for more than 12 years now, and our success has always been anchored on anonymity and account security," says Kraemer
I Will Prove Myself Faithful Not by What I Say, But by What I Do
I Will Not Judge on Anything Because It Is God Who Will Reveal Everything
I Will Let the Power of The Holy Spirit Reflect in the Ways I Serve God
Get rid of the old yeast— we talked about divine discipline
Divine Discipline is a sign of God’s love
Divine discipline is a sign of Belonging to God’s people
Divine Discipline Trains the People of God
You Were Washed— we talked about justification and sanctification
You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified
Justification is the act of God in bringing sinners into a new covenant relationship with himself through the forgiveness of sins
It is a judicial act of God whereby believers are “at once” absolved of all their guilt and they’re declared righteous— it’s the beginning of the Christian experience
While the word “Justification” [Greek pronounce as di-kaio-sis] was mentioned 5 times in the NIV— the words sanctification and glorification was not used in the Bible— but instead..
The word “sanctify” [Greek pronounce as ay-ya-so] which means purify [make holy, set apart] was used 4 times in the NIV
Sanctification is a present position and a persevering process
IT IS GOD’S WILL THAT WE BE SANCTIFIED
JESUS MADE HIMSELF HOLY SO THAT WE TOO MAY BE MADE HOLY
IT IS THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT MAKES US HOLY
The word “glorification” is neither used in the Hebrew Old Testament and the Greek New Testament, but the idea of glorification is conveyed by the Greek verb doxazo (glorify) and the Greek noun doxa (glory)
This stage of our salvation was anticipated way back in the Old Testament
Psalm 73:24 (NIV)
24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
While the New Testament is considerably fuller and richer in its development and made it explicit that believers will be glorified
Romans 8:30 (NIV)
30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
Why is Sanctification Not Mentioned in the Chain of process in this verse?
I think the reason is that, in Paul’s mind— sanctification is included in glorification— but let me differentiate those two stages of our salvation
Get two volunteers from the congregation to stand on opposite corner of the stage representing Jesus and Hitler
And then another volunteer to represent the most sanctified Paul
2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV)
18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
The keyword here is glory [“doxa”]— ever increasing glory— from glory to glory
Despite of the fact that in one of the key verses [Romans 8:30], it appears to place glorification in the past, but it is in all other passages seen as future
To be hoped for
Romans 5:2 (NIV)
2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
To be revealed
Romans 8:18 (NIV)
18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.
To be obtained
2 Timothy 2:10 (NIV)
10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.
WHEN? Regardless of the timing— pre/mid/post tribulation— this last and final stage of our salvation arrives on the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
Philippians 3:20–21 (NIV)
20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.
Why did I spent some of my Sermon time on this very important aspect of our salvation?
Because in case you haven’t noticed— These stages of our salvation is the underlying fact that Paul held onto when he rebuked the Corinthian Christians in this part of his first letter to them
I believe Paul did this to make them, and us understand that our bodies has participation in the final stage of our salvation which is glorification
Romans 8:23 (NIV)
23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.
Apparently the church had been quoting and misapplying the words, “I have the right to do anything” — and that was on their premise that they were forgiven— that they’re free— therefore they can do anything with their bodies — moreover they claim that their souls are already saved having been justified
To give you some background before we go to Paul’s letter— The church in Corinth was imbedded in a culture and religion where sexual immorality was not just acceptable but also popular
The temple of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of sex, pleasure, love & beauty was in Corinth— and sex was part their worship ritual— that’s why in another letter, Paul was explicit to mention orgies
Galatians 5:21 (NIV)
21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Another reason why I gave some of my Sermon time to this critically important matter because I think Paul wants it to be clear to us and to the church in Corinth that:
GLORIFICATION IS THE FUTURE HOPE OF BELIEVERS
1 Thessalonians 4:13–14 (NIV)
13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
GLORIFICATION IS AN INCENTIVE TO GODLINESS AND PERSEVERANCE
1 Corinthians 15:58 (NIV)
58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
GLORIFICATION IS AN INCENTIVE TO ENDURANCE OF SUFFERING
Romans 8:17 (NIV)
17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Now, while keeping these biblical facts at the back of your mind:
The stages of our salvation is the underlying fact that Paul held onto when he wrote this letter
That our bodies has participation in the final stage of our salvation [glorification]
Glorification is the future hope of believers
Glorification is an incentive to godliness and perseverance
Glorification is an incentive to endurance of suffering
Open your Bible to 1 Corinthians 6:12-20— highlight the following:
BUT NOT EVERYTHING IS BENEFICIAL — v.12
HE WILL RAISE US — v.14
WHOEVER IS UNITED WITH THE LORD IS ONE WITH HIM — v. 17
FLEE FROM SEXUAL IMMORALITY — v. 18
YOUR BODIES ARE TEMPLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT — v. 19
HONOR GOD WITH YOUR BODIES — v. 20
In this section of Paul’s first letter to Corinth— he continue to address the conduct of the Corinthian believers— Here he denounces them for using distorted understanding of freedom in Christ to validate their visitation of prostitutes
Paul said that the kingdom of God is for those who have been made pure by Jesus Christ— Sex outside marriage, male prostitution, sodomy and indecent acts all make us impure— Paul knows that the Corinthians used to behave in those ways— but they were washed
Paul was challenged by Christians who say it doesn’t matter what they do— they are free— their bodies don’t matter anymore, because their souls are safe with God— and anything they do can be forgiven
Paul agrees that it is a wonderful thing to be free— we are forgiven and we are released from guilt because Jesus died for us
But our freedom isn’t a permission to do whatever we like— Paul sees our freedom as a liberty to do what’s right— Paul teaches that our bodies are not just bins for food and tools for sex— our bodies belong to the Lord— they are part of his own body now
It is unthinkable to use a Christian body, which is part of Jesus, for sex with a prostitute

BOOK 1 CORINTHIANS 6:12-20

1 Corinthians 6:12–20 (NIV)
12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

LOOK

BUT NOT EVERYTHING IS BENEFICIAL
In chapter 10 Paul wrote a broader discourse concerning our Freedom as believers— he said something closely similar to what he said here
1 Corinthians 10:23 (NIV)
23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.
Some Christians in Corinth were excusing their sins by saying:
Christ had taken away all sin and so they had complete freedom to live as as they pleased
What they were doing was not completely forbidden by scripture
Paul answered these excuse:
While Christ has taken away our sins, this does not give us the freedom to go on doing what we know is wrong.
Some actions are not sinful in themselves, but they are not appropriate because they can control our lives and lead us away from God.
Some actions may hurt others— Anything we do that hurts others rather than helps others is not right.
We cannot commit sin with our bodies without damaging our soul because our bodies and souls are inseparably joined.
In the new earth we will have resurrected bodies that are not corrupted by sin— Then we will enjoy the fullness of our salvation.
Be careful that what God has allowed you to enjoy doesn't grow into bad habits that controls you
Sexual immorality is a temptation that is always before us— Look at society— movies, television, sex outside of marriage is treated as normal and even desirable part of life while marriage is joyless and confining— We are even looked down upon by others for being pure
God is not forbidding sexual to be difficult— He knows its power to destroy us physically and spiritually— No one should underestimate the power of sexual immorality.
It has devastated countless lives and destroyed families, churches, communities, and nations.
God wants to protect us from damaging ourselves and others— and so He offers to fill us— our loneliness, our desires— with Himself
HE WILL RAISE US
At this point— Paul made the connection between sexual immorality and its ramifications or implications on the final stage of our salvation [glorification]
Believers should not misuse their bodies for sexual immorality because God cares about their bodies that will be resurrected on His return
Rather they must recognize that their bodies belong to the Lord, who will resurrect them in the same manner that God had resurrected Him— Peter confirmed this during his very first sermon at the Pentecost
Acts 2:24 (NIV)
24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
WHOEVER IS UNITED WITH THE LORD IS ONE WITH HIM
When people enter into union with God— they become united with Him in Spirit by the Spirit— this union is like a marriage— restricts them from engaging in other unions that would defile [corrupt, desecrate, to make unclean] their covenant relationship with God
When Jesus prayed for all believers he said..
John 17:23 (NIV)
23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
FLEE FROM SEXUAL IMMORALITY
In another letter Paul said this
Ephesians 5:3 (NIV)
3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.
What are we going to do when we are faced with sexual sin?
Run run run run Fast!— a classical role model for us to emulate is Joseph the dreamer— when Potiphar’s [Commander of Pharaoh’s imperial guard] wife seduced him— Joseph ran away from it— You have to run away from this type of sin or it will consume you!
Genesis 39:11–12 (NIV)
11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.
God created sex to be a beautiful and essential ingredient of marriage— but sexual sin — sex outside of marriage— always hurts someone.
It hurts God because it shows that we prefer following our own desires instead of the leading of the Holy Spirit
It hurts others because it violates the commitment so necessary to a relationship
How many OFW’s families breaks apart because of sexual immorality?
It often brings diseases to our bodies— And it deeply affects our personalities— which respond in anguish when we harm ourselves physically and spiritually.
YOUR BODIES ARE TEMPLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Paul asked a rhetorical question to explain his association of the physical body with holiness— the way he asked this question suggests that the Corinthians should already know about this truth
Paul’s use of the singular form of “body” may emphasize that each believer is a temple of God— previously we also saw Paul described the entire church community as the temple of God
1 Corinthians 3:16 (NIV)
16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
Many people say they have a right to do whatever they want with their own bodies— Although they think that this is freedom, they are really enslaved to their own desires.
When we become Christians, the Holy Spirit fills and lives in us— Therefore, we no longer own our bodies.
We were bought at a price— Christ's death freed us from sin, but also obligates us to his service— therefore
HONOR GOD WITH YOUR BODIES
In Paul’s time, masters purchased slaves from other master [like Joseph, he was bought by Potiphar from the Midianites whom his brothers sold him to]
Paul reminds the Corinthians that God purchased them from slavery to sin and death through the sacrificial death of Christ— therefore, they belong to God not to themselves and so we should honor God with our bodies— our bodies is our living sacrifice
Romans 12:1 (NIV)
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

BY HIS POWER GOD RAISED THE LORD FROM THE DEAD, HE WILL RAISE US ALSO…

TOOK

MY BODY HAS PARTICIPATION IN THE FINAL STAGE OF MY GLORIFICATION

1 Corinthians 6:14 (NIV)
14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.
QUESTION: Can cremation affect the final stage of my glorification? If yes, how? If no, why not?

I WILL RUN AWAY QUICKLY WHEN TEMPTED WITH SEXUAL IMMORALITY

1 Corinthians 6:18 (NIV)
18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.
QUESTION: Living in a culture where sexual immorality is not just acceptable, but also popular. How could you preserve the holiness of your body? How could your run away from a society where sexual immorality is always within your shadows?

I WILL HONOR GOD WITH MY BODY

1 Corinthians 6:20 (NIV)
20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
If you live in a building owned by someone else, you try not to violate the building's rules— Because your body belongs to God, you must not violate His standards for living
QUESTION: In what ways can you honor God with your body?
