We know the Apostle Paul wrote this letter.
Paul was writing to the church located in the city of Colosse. (give map)
Paul pinned this letter during his first imprisonment in Rome around AD 60-62
Paul pinned the letter to address Heresy that arose inside the church.
The occasion/history:
A. The church at Colosse was a 1st generation Church, meaning Christ had not long ago been crucified and rose again, Pentecost was even a closer event. The Gospel was spreading like wildfire.

#4 letter to address Heresy:

Heresy is: heresy. Any teaching rejected by the Christian community as contrary to Scripture and hence to orthodox doctrine. Most of the teachings that have been declared heretical have to do with either the nature of God or the person of Jesus Christ. The term heresy is not generally used to characterize non-Christian belief. That is to say, systems of belief such as atheism or agnosticism, or non-Christian religions such as Buddhism or Islam are not technically heresy. The term heresy is generally reserved for any belief that claims to be Christian and scriptural but has been rejected by the church as sub-Christian or antiscriptural.

What was the Heresy Paul was addressing:

Gnosticism. Religious thought distinguished by claims to obscure and mystical knowledge, and emphasizing knowledge rather than faith. Until the mid-20th century Gnosticism was regarded as a Christian heresy which developed through the interweaving of Christian experience and thought with Greek philosophy. More recently, many scholars define the Gnostics more broadly as devotees of a religious view which borrowed ideas from many religious traditions. The meanings of these borrowed terms and practices were shaped into mythological expressions of experiential salvation.

Which included the following characteristics:

It was Jewish in nature, stressing the need to observe Old Testament laws and ceremonies.
It was Philosophical, laying emphasis on some SPECIAL or DEEPER KNOWLEDGE.
It was exclusive, stressing a special privilege and perfection
It Denied the deity of Christ.

Overview of Pauls Purpose in this letter:

1. he sought to show the Deity and Supremacy of Christ in the face of this heresy.

2. he wanted to lead believers into spiritual maturity.

3. he wanted to inform them about his current state of affairs and request prayers on his behalf.

Hand out outline for our study.
