Sermon: John 6:30-50
RECAP LAST WEEK:
Jesus answers the 4 questions that are REALLY on their hearts
Actually we got to 2...
V25: “Rabbi when did you come here?”
Instead of telling them when and why He came, Jesus told them why they came—because they wanted more food miraculously provided by Jesus.
V28:  “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?
They were asking for works to be righteous before God.
We (21st Century Americans) are STILL asking this question.
It’s just like humanity to have all kinds of questions but be unable to articulate what is really on their hearts.
Galatians 2:16 (ESV): 16 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
INTRODUCTION: Continue from last week where we left off.
Jesus fed the 5000
The trip to the other side of The Sea of Galilee
Somewhere along the line the crowd picks up some “Jewish Religious Leaders’
Downhill from there...
John 6:30-31 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”

I. The 3rd Question:

V30c What work do you perform?
Jesus’ questioners are trying to manipulate Him into providing daily bread for them, just as Israel had from God during the Exodus.
The people are still trying to get Jesus to be an earthly king.
Provide food for them.
Become highly esteemed enough to challenge the current rulers.
Use the favor and strength of God like the champions in Jewish history to restore them to a prosperous kingdom.
The Pharisees and Scribes are still trying to provoke Jesus so they can denounce Him as not being from God.
John 6:32-33 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
It is as if Jesus is saying, “What other work will I do? This is the work: to give you the word of God and salvation in and through Me.
Jesus is trying to teach the people that God already gave them physical food and it did not restore them to Him. This time God sent Bread from heaven which could.
People easily get lost in trying to obtain AND maintain physical needs, comforts & securities.
THE 3rd QUESTION: What sign do you do? Really was, “What can you do to help our current cultural, political and physical needs?”
John 6:34-35 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

II. The 4th and Final Question; and people are still asking these same questions the same way TODAY!

“Give us this bread always..”
The people refused to see past what Jesus could do for them physically
Looking for the blessing and not the one giving it.
The religious people.
Expecting Him to prove Himself worthy of their respect and authority.
John 6:36-40 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

III. Jesus is worthy of their confidence, because:

He perfectly satisfies our spiritual hunger
(He who comes to Me shall never hunger)
He receives all who come to Him
(All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out)
He isn’t interested in His own agenda, but His Father’s
(not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me)
He will keep those who come to Him safe
(all He has given Me I should lose nothing)
The destiny of those who believe in Him is eternal life
(everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life)

IV. - CONCLUSION

“For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven”:
Jesus tried to lift their minds above earthly things and onto heavenly realities, to an understanding that He is necessary for spiritual life, just as bread is necessary for physical survival.
Jesus even told the devil, “Man shall not live on bread alone.”
What are YOU filled with??
PASTOR JOHNS' QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
"There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread."
-Mahatma Gandhi
**In other words, Some people will never be able to focus in anything past what is right in front of their eyes.
**Another quotes: "Without the Bread of Life, you're toast"
