Intro & Opening

Who am I? What makes me me? What is our identity.
What do these questions have to do with Dating and Purity.
Jerry McGuire - You complete me… That is a problematic

Main Idea

Purity Matters - Jesus gives you value and your identity not your partner.

Why This Matters

The Big Lies -
1) it is who I am
2) it isn’t a big deal
This is how crazy the world has become because these two points don’t make ANY SENSE when the sit beside each other.
I mean which is it? It is either WHO YOU ARE or It ISN”T A BIG DEAL
It can’t be both. Who we date and who we are are NOT the same thing and they DO matter and they do not make us who we are.
We are looking at purity and identity today.
What makes us… us. Beginning with

Scripture

Romans 13:8–14 NIV
Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
8 - Love each other more than money
9 - Love your neighbour
10 - Love is everything
11 - We are closer now than we have ever been to the end
Funny because everyday is closer to the end. Just like every new photo of you, is the oldest picture of you. (explain)
He is making a point but it is kind of a funny one. If you really stop to think about it.
Moving on
12 - Let's focus on Heavenly things
We get so caught up in tomorrow we forget about today!
How many times have we said I can’t wait until…comes or
If I could just...
I will finally be happy once...
Thats where we get lost. The pursuit of Earthly riches and earthly things ESPECIALLY our relationships.
Yes they are important but remember from last week…not as important as to effect our relationship with Christ.
The world tells us the two lies
It is who you are and it ins’t a big deal.
These lies push us to be immoral.
We believe the world and we dovote ourselves to these two lies...
13 - Let's not be immoral
14 - Jesus is enough we are more than our basic desires
Jesus gives us our identity.
Not who we are married to. not who we are dating. They are an important part of our lives but not the most important....
1 Thessalonians 4:1–8 NIV
As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.
1 - We need to do more than simply live
2 - You know what Jesus wants
3 - God want's us to be pure
4 - Show self control
5 - Not passionate lust like unbelievers
When we recognize who Jesus is in our lives and understand we get our FULL value and worth from HIM the rest slips away.
We need to commit to him.
6 - God will punish those in the end, how reject him through sexual immoratlity
I thought this was harsh and what about mistakes and slips.
But this is talking about rejecting God BECAUSE of our passion and desire for sexual imorrality.
The unforgivable sin is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Explain that
Matthew 12:31 NIV
And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
7 - We are called to be holy
8 - If we reject this we aren't rejecting humans we are rejecting God.
Our identity is rooted in Jesus!!!

Application

The Big Lies -
1) it is who I am
2) it isn’t a big deal
You complete me!!!
Two halves make a whole
People who chase the peson
Pretty little liars
How will we know if we don’t
This is what our teens are learning…these to lies with strong emphasis from hollywood
If we root our identity in someone who isnt Jesus we will be let down.
Which sounds harsh but the truth is...
Fallen...
Sex IS a big deal it is tied to our emotional health and a gift to be shared with our spouse.
But our identity is NOT rooted in it.

Conclusion

Jesus is makes us who we are.
