“He Is” - the arms that carry us
our Burden-bearer
the Restorer of Justice
Oldest & First prophetic book - not much known about Amos - layman - not a prophet as a “job” - livestock farmer by trade
Mainly the northern kingdom but Judah is mentioned a few times, too.
Rich vs. poor; self-righteous, self-centered leaders; social justice is the subject
God is upset that they “worship” on the Sabbath but seems to have no impact throughout the week. “Complacent Extravagance” - The New Interpreter's Bible Commentary
Amos has a cloud of death and destruction
God would darken the day at noon during Messiah's death (Amos 8:9) verse 10b - “like mourning for an only son.”
Context of the book is the end of Israel is coming - no future for the nation. Speaks to the exile yet to come.
Amos is such a “downer” that it is rarely quoted. Christians want to share hope!
A glimmer of hope as it ends with two short messages of salvation.
Please stand as we honor the reading of God’s Word.
Amos 9:11–15 NIV
11 “In that day “I will restore David’s fallen shelter— I will repair its broken walls and restore its ruins— and will rebuild it as it used to be, 12 so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear my name,” declares the Lord, who will do these things. 13 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and the planter by the one treading grapes. New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills, 14 and I will bring my people Israel back from exile. “They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit. 15 I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them,” says the Lord your God.
THE WORD OF GOD, FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD

WHO GOD IS

A family, consisting of a father, mother, young son and an even younger daughter, visited the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico on their vacation. While exploring the cavern on their guided tour, the guide turned out the lights to show how dark it was beneath the surface of the earth. Out of the darkness came two sounds, the gasp of the little girl who was caught by surprise at the sudden darkness, and the comforting words of her older brother, "Don't worry, sis, there's someone here who knows how to turn on the lights."
That was Amos' word to the people in his day in the shadow of his message of judgment. "Dark days are ahead," the prophet declared. But then he added this word: "Don't worry, there is someone here who knows how to turn on the lights." Back To The Future - Contributed by Bob Joyce on Dec 28, 2010

CONCLUSION:
Jesus confronted challenged the leaders and people during His earthly ministry. He called in question how we treat one another. He called into question the outward religious actions without the proper heart and relationship with God.
One lesson in Matthew 25 Jesus shared was about the separating of Sheep and Goats in the final days “OT - Day of the Lord”- Sheep are referred to as the righteous.
Matthew 25:37–40 NIV
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
The questions Jesus shares here we can see in Amos’ condemnation of how Israel treated those in need which brought their destruction.
Amos says God has a better way. Jesus came to share a better way. The gospel lived out in us is a better way.
