For His Name’s Sake
Sunday, April 20, 2008
"I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake."
(1 John 2:12, ESV)
1. John has been showing us some of the basic principles, some of the core demands which the Christian life makes upon us and today and for the next couple of weeks he pauses, makes a parenthesis if you will.
2. Why does he pause and take a break?
It seems to be, because the Apostle was also a pastor, an understanding and loving pastor.
He wanted to make sure he was carrying the flock along as he moved forward.
"I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth."
(1 John 2:21, ESV)
3. John's object was not only to lay down Christian doctrine but it was also to example to the flock how to put their doctrine into practice.
It was a way to say "let me remind you of the one thing I am basing my whole letter on."
"We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one."
(1 John 5:19, ESV)
4. I am writing to you [grapho] John is the pastor who is personally addressing the members of the church.
When he says, “I write,” he means that his words, being penned, are permanent.
" My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.
But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous."
(1 John 2:1, ESV)
" Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning.
The old commandment is the word that you have heard.
At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining."
(1 John 2:7-8, ESV)
5. John wants the flock to know that they are forgiven, a part of the eternal kingdom and that they can know they have eternal life.
" I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life."
(1 John 5:13, ESV)
6.
Because they have eternal life, John writes to warn the flock to be on guard from deceivers.
"I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you."
(1 John 2:26, ESV)
7. Little children [Teknia] here refers to all his readers just as in verse 1 of this second chapter.
This is a term of love from an pastor about to pass from this life to the next generation of believers.
" My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.
But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous."
(1 John 2:1, ESV)
8.
Because your sins are forgiven.
If there is ever one theme of good news that is so clear in the Biblical witness from cover to cover it is this fact "Our sins are forgiven!"
"and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem."
(Luke 24:47, ESV)
"And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”"
(Luke 7:48, ESV)
"Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you," (Acts 13:38, ESV)
"And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”"
(Mark 2:5, ESV)
9. When God forgives sins, they are forgiven once and for all time.
Sins have been, are, and remain forever forgiven for those who belong to Jesus.
"who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases," (Psalm 103:3, ESV)
"He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities."
(Psalm 103:10, ESV)
"as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us." (Psalm 103:12, ESV)
10.
On account of His name.
John purposely puts emphasis on the term "name."
This "name" refers to the the complete revelation of the historical Jesus, the Person and work of God's Son and what He accomplished is both perfect and complete!...PTL
" My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.
But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world."
(1 John 2:1-2, ESV)
"In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."
(1 John 4:10, ESV)
11.
God forgives sins on the basis of His Son's atoning death on Calvary's cross.
The implication here is that everyone who truly believes in Jesus and repents, receives remission of sin.
"“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
For David says concerning him, “ ‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope.
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.
You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’
“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.
This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’
Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
(Acts 2:22-38, ESV)
12. Repent and believe!
"And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk?
The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him.
But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead.
To this we are witnesses.
And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.
“And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers.
But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled.
Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out," (Acts 3:12-19, ESV)
13.
Repent!
"When they heard these things they fell silent.
And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.”"
(Acts 11:18, ESV)
"The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”"
(Acts 17:30-31, ESV)
"testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ."
(Acts 20:21, ESV)
