INTRO

Thank you for the invitation
Always ready to give an answer (1 Pet 3:15) but I have questions.
The desire to share the Gospel and give an answer is more valuable than having the answers
We’ll always have questions, but if we have the willingness to answer, we’ll search for the answers to these questions.
Questions about musical instrument
Understanding the fundamental principle of authority will resolve any questions we may have about it.
Questions that are raised
DISCUSSION
The principle of authority
Jesus given all authority (Mt 28:18)
Our spokesman (Heb 1:1-2)
Will revealed through the apostles and prophets (Eph 2:20)
We are under Law today (Gal 6:2; Jam 1:25)
All we do must be authorized by Jesus (Col 3:17)
How does the NT authorize?
Explicit statements and commands (Mk 16:16; Acts 2:38)
Examples (Acts 8:38-39—baptism is immersion)
Implication
Sometime called necessary inference
Speaker implies; hearer infers
Strive to infer everything God’s Word implies
Ex: All subject to the Gospel (Mk 16:15)
Expediency (1 Cor 10:23)
Something is an expedient if it helps fulfill a command or explicit statement
A baptistry helps carry out the command to baptize
Common questions
Isn’t it just a tradition?
NO, it’s a matter of authority.
Where is authority for the practice?
Col 3:16
Why is it OK in the OT but not in the NT?
Won’t there be harps in heaven?
Is it really wrong if the NT doesn’t condemn it?
Isn’t it a matter of personal faith? (Rom 14)? Its wrong for me, but I can’t really say it’s wrong for them.
