Lesson One
Matthew 4:19 (KJV 1900)
And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
The Bible was given to us by God to reveal Himself to us. God wants us to know Him. When we learn of the person Jesus Christ the Son of God we learn of the true God of heaven. It is through this knowledge that we are brought to faith in Jesus Christ so we can receive eternal life through Him (John 20:31).
John 20:31
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Thomas did not believe Christ until he physically saw the resurrected Saviour. When he did see him, he worshipped him and called him “Lord” and “God”. Jesus did not reject this worship, but received it because it was rightfully His to receive. We are blessed above Thomas if we will believe Jesus is God by faith in His Word (John 20:24-31).
John 20:24–31
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Doctrineteaching
Theology – the science or study of God
Systematic theology - the systematic way we come to certain conclusions about God and other subjects by using the whole of the scripture in its context.
Philosophy - A personal system of beliefs about life and about how to live.
Christology – the doctrine or teaching of Christ
Jesus Christ left us doctrine or teaching that we base our beliefs in. Theology to a believer is biblical theology because our belief of God is derived out of our study of the scriptures. We do not derive any doctrine of God by one verse pulled out of its context, but from the complete canon of the scriptures and what they reveal to us of God.

A Christian’s philosophy is developed by his view of God which is developed by his theology . His theology is arrived at by his systematic study of the scriptures.

Many people develop philosophies and then fit their theology into their philosophy rather than developing their philosophy by their biblical theology. Our view of God will always reflect in the way we live our lives.
It is important to understand who Christ is, since he is the express image of God to mankind. This is the reason why Jesus called His disciples to follow Him rather than just sending them out to win people. They had to have the right philosophy first, based on a proper knowledge of who Jesus Christ was. This will be our focus for this lesson (Matthew 22:41-46; 16:13; 22:41-46).
Matthew 22:41–46
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
Matthew 16:13
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
Matthew 22:41–46
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

I. The Lord Accepted What The Old Testament Said About Him.

A. Jesus told the disciples on the road to Emmaus that the Old Testament spoke of Him (Luke 24:25-27).

Luke 24:25–27
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

B. Jesus’ incarnation and birth were foretold in the Old Testament (Isaiah 7:14).

Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, And shall call his name Immanuel.

C. Jesus Christ was given specific titles in the Old Testament (Isaiah 9:6).

Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

1. Wonderful – a miracle

2. Counselor – an advisor, a deliberator or resolver

3. The Mighty God – a powerful God

4. The Everlasting Father – a perpetual caregiver and chief

5. The Prince of Peace – a ruler of welfare and prosperity

II. Jesus Christ Affirmed That He Is God In The New Testament (John 3:13).

John 3:13
And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
God is indivisible and though Christ was on earth he was also in heaven at the same time. This must be believed by faith. This is a statement of Christ’s compete deity. He is equal with God in every way and is affirmed as equal with God in the Bible (John 5:17-18).
John 5:17–18
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

A. Jesus said He was equal with God (John 5:19).

John 5:19
Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

B. Jesus said He is Equal with God in Knowledge(John 5:20).

John 5:20
For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
Jesus was omniscient (all knowing). Jesus knows everything that God the Father knows. We as man cannot know this, because his thoughts are above all of our thoughts.

C. Jesus said He is equal with God in Power (John 5:21).

John 5:21
For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
Jesus was omnipotent (all powerful). To claim equal power with God is to claim yourself God of which Jesus does. No man or angel could ever claim this power without stating they are God.

D. Jesus said He was equal with God in Honor (John 5:22-23; 8:58; 10:30; 19:7; Matt. 26:62-66).

John 5:22–23
For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
Honor means to value. As highly as we value the father we value the son. Just like honoring our parents. We honor the one as much as the other.
John 8:58
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
John 10:30
I and my Father are one.
John 19:7
The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
Matthew 26:62–66
And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.
He was guilty to them because they knew that Jesus was saying he was god and they rejected that notion. It is obvious to them what Jesus is declaring to them.

III. Jesus Christ Is Who He Says He Is, And We Can Know God Through Him (John 14:5-9).

John 14:5–9
Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

A. To become a witness of Jesus Christ we must be witness to knowing Him personally (Acts 4:12).

Acts 4:12
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
We are not witnesses of a denomination, or movement. We are not even witnesses of Christianity. We are witnesses of the person of Christ. If we do not know Him personally we will not be effective in our witness of Him. We are to be witnesses of who Christ is and what He has personally done for us.

B. To become a witness of Jesus Christ we must be witness to knowing Him scripturally (II John 5-11).

2 John 5–11
And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
for he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
Too many so called Christians think that it does not matter who we believe Christ is. We should just get along and do not emphasis our differences in doctrine. The bible says quite the opposite. It tells us to not get on board with any person or movement that teaches a doctrine about Christ that is not scriptural. There is only one Jesus Christ and He has revealed Himself plainly in the scriptures.
