Pre-Sermon Ice Breaker

A man came home from work and found his three children outside, still in their pajamas, playing in the mud, with empty food boxes and wrappers strewn all around the front yard.
The door of his wife’s car was open, as was the front door to the house and there was no sign of the dog.
Proceeding into the entryway, he found an even bigger mess. A lamp had been knocked over, and the throw rug was wadded against one wall.
In the front room the TV was loudly blaring a cartoon channel, and the family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing.
In the kitchen, dishes filled the sink, breakfast food was spilled on the counter, the fridge door was open wide, dog food was spilled on the floor, a broken glass lay under the table, and a small pile of sand was spread by the back door.
He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and more piles of clothes, looking for his wife. He was worried she might be ill, or that something serious had happened.
He was met with a small trickle of water as it made its way out the bathroom door.
As he peered inside he found wet towels, scummy soap, and more toys strewn over the floor. Miles of toilet paper lay in a heap and toothpaste had been smeared over the mirror and walls.
As he rushed to the bedroom, he found his wife still curled up in the bed in her pajamas, reading a novel.
She looked up at him, smiled, and asked how his day went. He looked at her bewildered and asked:
“What happened here?!”
She again smiled and answered, “You know every day when you come home from work and you ask me what in the world I do all day?”
“Yes,” was his incredulous reply.
She answered, “Well, today I didn’t do it.”

Introduction

Throughout 2021 we have been engaged in the 2021 Scripture Memory Challenge. Our theme during the month of July has been this simple word Now. The little word “Now” is a very interesting word. The word means, “at the present moment of time, or without any further delay. The Holy Spirit moved the writers and translators of the Bible to use that little word quite often throughout the Bible. The word “Now” is used exactly 1355 times in the King James Bible.
One author as I studied noted 7 specific now’s in the Bible. In Hebrews 9:26 was the Now of Sacrifice, in Jude 1:24 was the Now of Safety, In Romans 15:13 was the Now of Serenity, in Hebrews 11:1 (our scripture from last week) was the Now of Surety, In 1 John 3:2 is the Now of Sonship, a particular favorite of mine is 2 Corinthians 6:2 the Now of Salvation, and in 2 Timothy 3:8 is the Now of Stubbornness. With so many now’s it is easy to miss one. Today I want to look at the Now of Sanctification.
Romans Chapter 8 has been fitly called the “Chapter of the Holy Spirit.” The word Spirit occurs 21 times in Romans 8.
We should never underestimate the significance of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
John 16:7 KJV 1900
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Today I want to examine with you the 3-fold work of the Holy Spirit in Sanctification. Peter in his 1st Epistle writes that we are:
1 Peter 1:2 KJV 1900
2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
Romans 15:16 KJV 1900
16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.
Let’s examine the components of this sanctification found in our passage today.

Body

Escape of Condemnation

Romans 8:1 KJV 1900
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
How does this matter of being in Christ come about.
Titus 3:5 KJV 1900
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV 1900
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
John 3:18 KJV 1900
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Enabled to Not Walk after the Flesh

Romans 8:1 KJV 1900
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
John 1:12 KJV 1900
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Romans 8:5 KJV 1900
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Romans 8:13 KJV 1900
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Galatians 5:16 KJV 1900
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Empowered to follow the Spirit

Romans 8:1 KJV 1900
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
John 16:13 KJV 1900
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
John 14:26 KJV 1900
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Zechariah 4:6 KJV 1900
6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, Saith the Lord of hosts.

Conclusion

Do you have a clear conscience? Do you have a victorious Christian life? Do you feel sanctified, holy?
Or do you walk in defeat? Are you constantly losing the spiritual battles in your life?
There is therefore, NOW no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
You maybe struggling because you have given mental ascent to the gospel. You believe the facts of the Bible, that Jesus lived, died, and rose again, but you have never received Christ as your savior you have never been born again. Today I encourage you to take that step of faith.
You may be born again, but you have never redeemed the benefits of this relationship. When we lived in Erie there was a store called Loblaws, every week they had coupons in the paper for an item, a loaf of bread, a pound of bacon, a bag of sugar. People never went and redeemed those items. Maybe you never even realized that the power of the Holy Spirit was available to you. God’s Holy Spirit isn’t the court jester in the Kingdom of God, just putting on a show. The Holy Spirit helps us escape condemnation, enables us to not walk after the flesh and empowers us to walk in the spirit. Come and redeem these promises today.
