!!! Introduction:
This is one of 7 Penitential Psalms
It is believed to have been written when David was smitten by some disease following his sin with Bathsheba.
Here David seems truly penitent over his sin
Bishop Horne well expresses it, “(David sees) above, an angry God, ready to take vengeance; beneath, the fiery gulf, ready to receive him; without, a world in flames; within, the gnawing worm.”
O how people today need to see the same when it comes to sin!!
There are many ways that people try to deal with sin today:
~*Some try to drown it with drugs and alcohol
~*Some try to deny it: change definitions of what is right~/wrong
At the same time they try to get others to agree
It seems today that we cannot really call anything wrong
~*Some try to deflect it: It is always considered someone else’s fault
Yet note what we read in Jeremiah 2:22
“For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap, /Yet/ your iniquity is marked before Me,” says the Lord GOD.”
None of these things really deals with sin
David deals with his sin correctly in this Psalm
!!! I. David expresses genuine sorrow for his sin

Example of:
v. 2 “I am weak” “My bones are troubled”
Weak = faded away like a wilted flower
v. 3 “My soul is troubled”
v. 6 He is weary of groaning, he is overwhelmed by tears
Weary = worn out by his groaning
Swimming in his tears
v. 7 He is filled with grief
His eyes are sunken in
v. 8 The Lord heard his weeping

This is no light, “Lord I am sorry for my sins.”
David is broken by his sin

This implies several things:
1) David has a relationship with the Lord: Therefore he could not continue in his sin
So many today who claim to know Christ seem to continue in sin as if it is no big deal.
They seem completely unbothered by it.
Where is the ministry of the Holy Spirit?
It should be harder for us to continue in sin than for David, the Holy Spirit did not dwell in him the way He does us.
2) David accepted full responsibility for the sin he committed.
We can never get to the place of true sorrow for our sin if we in any way place the blame on someone else or try to excuse our sin in any way.
Romans 6 is a chapter that tells us there is no excuse for us who are in Christ to continue in sin.
3) David did not want to continue in his sin.
We cannot plan to continue in sin and truly sorrowful over it at the same time.

David receives God’s forgiveness vv.
8-10

Note the change in tone of these verses

Ø The Lord will receive my prayer
Ø My enemies will be ashamed, troubled, and turned back

The whole point is that God heard and forgave David and David acted on the forgiveness
Today many times people struggle with God’s forgiveness
“There is no way that God could forgive me!”
David began by seeking God’s mercy, God granted it!!

Sen. Mark Hatfield recounts the following history: James Garfield was a lay preacher and principal of his denominational college.
They say he was ambidextrous and could simultaneously write Greek, with one hand and Latin with the other.
In l880, he was elected president of the United States, but after only six months in office, he was shot in the back with a revolver.
He never lost consciousness.
At the hospital, the doctor probed the wound with his little finger to seek the bullet.
He couldn't find it, so he tried a silver-tipped probe.
Still he couldn't locate the bullet.
They took Garfield back to Washington, D.C.
Despite the summer heat, they tried to keep him comfortable.
He was growing very weak.
Teams of doctors tried to locate the bullet, probing the wound over and over.
In desperation they asked Alexander Graham Bell, who was working on a little device called the telephone, to see if he could locate the metal inside the president's body.
He came, he sought, and he too failed.
The president hung on through July, through August, but in September he finally died-not from the wound, but from infection.
The repeated probing, which the physicians thought would help the man, eventually, killed him.
So it is with people who dwell too long on their sin and refuse to release it to God.
