Text: Revelation 22:16
Jesus declares in: Revelation 22:16 (NASB 2020) “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you of these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.
There are three other passages that we can combine as we think of a star symbolizing Christ and His work.
In Numbers 24:17, there is a direct prophecy of Christ, the star is used as a symbol of honor, dignity and authority. “There shall come a Star out of Jacob.”
Numbers 24:17 (NASB 2020)
I see him, but not now; I look at him, but not near; A star shall appear from Jacob, A scepter shall rise from Israel, And shall smash the forehead of Moab, And overcome all the sons of Sheth.
Balaam prophesied, and all that he prophesied was from God, but he still lost out with God because he counseled Balak to put stumbling blocks before the sons of Israel
Revelation 2:14 NASB 2020
14 ‘But I have a few things against you, because you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality.
Then 2 Peter 1:19 .
2 Peter 1:19 NASB 2020
19 And so we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.
What Christ will be for the world, namely, a light rising upon its darkness, that He is for each of us, rising in our hearts.
It is not yet full day with the Church or the world; twilight lingers around and there are shadows within the souls of men.
But He gives us the promise of the natural Rising Star, the arising of which is a token and a promise of the perfect day which is at hand.
And then, twice over in Revelation we read of “the Morning Star.” One we already read, but the other is spoken of in (2:28) as one of the rewards given to overcomers is the Morning Star (2:28).
Since Christ is this Star, He is to give us Himself, and what greater reward could we possibly have than the full enjoyment of Christ Himself?
As we already saw, Christ presents Himself as “Jesus … the bright and morning star” (Rev 22:16), or, as a modern translation has it, “the bright Star of the morning.”
Before we partake of the Lord’s Supper together and then pray I would like for us to think about Jesus, the Bright morning star in 2 ways:
a. First, Jesus Is the Forerunner of the Day!
Jesus is coming!
The morning star is the harbinger, a prophecy, a messenger of light and life.
Christ sustains the same relation to His people as the morning star does to the world. It succeeds the darkness of night and ushers in another day, mingling its rays with the morning light.
It heralds the approach of a new period of time and is therefore a fitting type of Him who is to lead us on to Eternal Day.
The morning star is likewise a terror to evil men and thieves, for when they see this sun of the morning rising they haste away to hide themselves, lest the light of day overtake them and they are discovered.
As Jesus said in John 3 “Men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil.” It is thus Christ is a terror to the wicked. Godless men would like to pluck this revealing star out of the divine firmament.
The morning star possesses an honorable name. It is called “son of the morning.” And Christ is the true Son of the Morning. Lucifer is a counterfeit. Twilight may linger, but Dayspring is at hand As the Light of the World, the Son of God is coming to banish its darkness.
The morning star shines on although it may be obscured by mists, fogs, clouds and misty vapors.
It is constantly in motion; nothing can stay its circuit or shining.
How suggestive all this is of Christ! Nothing demons or men can do will ever deter His progress.
He will appear according to His promise.
b. Secondly, Jesus Is the Guide of Mariners!
This notable, beautiful star serves many great and beneficent purposes.
Especially in ancient times it was a useful guide to sailors crossing the ocean.
By its light, travelers are able to direct their course.
Christ is highly esteemed as a Guiding Star. Sailing homewards, we can steer a right course and avoid all the rocks and ultimately arrive in the heavenly port, when our eyes are on Jesus.
What a blessed thing it is that light came into the world in the person of Him who is the Bright and Morning Star!
Shipwrecked souls, distressed and storm-tossed, can depend upon the Lord to guide them into a desired haven.
We need to go back to the days of old.
Abandon the GPS, Google maps, etc — none of these things can guide us onto the spiritual path we are to take.
Jeremiah 6:16 (NASB 2020)
16 This is what the Lord says: “Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; Then you will find a resting place for your souls. ...’
Jesus is that Bright Morning Star because He was willing to humble Himself:
Philippians 2:8 NASB 2020
8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death: death on a cross.
We remember that as we partake of the Lord’s Supper
Give thanks!
Pray that we will be worthy to partake.
1 Corinthians 11:27–29 NLT
27 So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. 29 For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself.
C. Prayer
D. Come:
1. Break the bread
2. Get a cup
3. Hold elements
4. Stand (or sit) across the front.
5. We will all partake together.
D. Bread
1. 1 Corinthians 11:23–24 (NLT) For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
2. Prayer
3. End prayer with prayer from Seder:
i. Blessed are you, O Lord our God, who brings forth bread from the earth.
4. Partake
E. Cup
1. 1 Corinthians 11:25 (NLT) In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.”
2. Prayer
1. End prayer with prayer from Seder:
i. Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.
2. Partake
F. Jesus is coming soon!
1. 1 Corinthians 11:26 (NLT) For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
2. Now, let’s seek the Lord in prayer.
That He will be to us the things that we saw in His Name, Bright Morning Star:
The One whose presence reminds us the night is almost over — the Eternal Day is at hand.
That He will guide us — IF we keep our eyes on Him.
