The Lexham Bible Dictionary Etymology of the Name

The name Joel (יוֹאֵל, yo'el) means “Yahweh is God.” The name is a composite consisting of the two most prominent names for God in the Hebrew Bible: Yahweh and Elohim. Likewise, the name Elijah means “Yahweh is God,” but the names for God are reversed (Barton, Joel and Obadiah, 39).

In John 5:39 - “Scriptures testify about me”
“He Is” the Spirits power
He is the Baptizer with the Holy Ghost and Fire
the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit, fire.
the Outpourer of the Holy Spirit.
The Baptizer With The Holy Spirit
Messiah will offer salvation to all mankind
Messiah would baptize people with the Holy Spirit
You may have heard the words of our scripture but didn’t realize you were hearing words from another place in the Bible - I will let you know where at the end of the message.
Context: an army of locusts of devoured the land; God share’s his answer to what he will do to restore the land and His People. His ongoing answer leads us into His sharing about the Day of the Lord.
Please stand as we honor the reading of God’s Word
Joel 2:28–32 NIV
28 “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. 30 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 32 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.

“Breathe On me, Breath of God,
Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.”
“I will pour out my Spirit...” (verses 28a, 29)

Dreams & Visions

Dreams & Visions (verse 28b)
Prophecy - proclaim God’s Word
God is providing the Dreams & Visions
Today - dreams > vision > mission statements > goals > actions
How are we doing as we listen and implement?

Wonders & Miracles

Wonders & Miracles (verses 30-31)
“Marveled” NT often translated in Revised Version 1885/1901 GB/US
a marvelous event manifesting a supernatural act of a divine agent; often deviating from the normal course (or laws) of nature. Open Bible Sense Lexicon
Planetarium in Elgin, Illinois
4H - Weather & Electricity - I didn’t live on a farm
Solar eclipse in Nashville
Technology - still can’t match our brains
“Wonders in the heavens and on the earth”
“That’s unbelievable!” - not really - God created and controls nature - nothing surprises him - and he can alter if he chooses
Always trying to explain it or understand it
We should just be “amazed”

Salvation Available

Salvation Available (verse 32)
God’s Goal for dreams/visions and wonders/miracles is Salvation for all who call on the name of the Lord
Call on the Lord: “Worship God and pray to him” - NIV Study Bible notes
The world needs the church to draw attention to the Lord! The world needs the church to lead to the Lord! The world needs the church to proclaim the Word of the Lord! The world needs the church to love them like the Lord does!
Our Scripture is more well known from Pentecost sermons - Peter quotes these verses from Joel to explain what was happening on the Day of Pentecost
Luke recorded these words of Peter right after he quoted Joel (our Scripture reading today)
Acts 2:22 NIV
22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.
Peter goes on to explain about the cross, the empty tomb, and answers their question: “What must we do?” - “Repent and be Baptized…in the Name of Jesus Christ”
Joel shares that “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”
