The Unpardonable Sin

Mark 3:28-30

Introduction:
Throughout the generations of christianity there has been talk of “The Unpardonable Sin.” But through the years this “SIN” has changed according to what the church, pope or religious leaders have labeled it. For instance;
In the 16th century Roman Catholic Church there were those who moved away from the doctrine of the “papal supremacy”. Those people were called protestants/reformers and labeled heretics. [Martin Luther most notable]
Heresy is any belief or theory that is strongly at variance with established beliefs or customs, in particular the accepted beliefs of a church or religious organization.
In the 18th/19th century church, divorce was considered the unpardonable sin. Any person who divorced and remarried while their spouse was still alive was considered dammed to hell forever without forgiveness from God. [Illus. Mary Ann Holton was a part of a church of God and was told she could not join a church again because she was divorced. Led her to faith in the Lord, baptized, became the most faithful servant I’ve known and now resides in glory with Jesus]
From the 16th century to present time, “suicide” has been labeled the unpardonable sin. According to the Bible, suicide is not what determines whether a person gains entrance into heaven. If an unsaved person commits suicide, he has done nothing but “expedite” his journey to hell. However, that person who committed suicide will ultimately be in hell for rejecting salvation through Christ, not because he committed suicide (see John 3:18).
John 3:18 NKJV
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
So as the years have passed so has the list changed of the Unpardonable Sin. But Jesus tells us in scripture that there is only one sin that can’t be forgiven man if committed.
Text; Mark 3:28-30
Mark 3:28–30 NKJV
28 “Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; 29 but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation”— 30 because they said, “He has an unclean spirit.”

Forgivable Sin; 28

Jesus makes it very clear that “all sin” and “blasphemy spoken” will be forgiven men.
Sin- rebellion against God and His law and a violation of His divine will. This includes thoughts or action against God.
Romans 3:23 NKJV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
List of sins (Rom. 1:29-31)
Blaspheme- language expressing disrespect for God or for something sacred. To curse, slander or profane.
Exodus 20:7 NKJV
7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
The time this scripture is spoken was before Jesus went to Calvary. And Jesus’ mission at Calvary was to forgive the sins of men by taking God’s wrath for us.
1 Peter 3:18 NKJV
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
Hebrews 10:12 NKJV
12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,
1 John 4:10 NKJV
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
So all sins and blasphemy was taken care of @ Calvary by that one act of God in Jesus Christ! Amen!
Romans 8:38–39 NKJV
38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Unpardonable Sin; 29

Unpardonable- can’t be forgiven from guilt. To receive judgment for a crime.
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit- language expressing disrespect for God or for something sacred. To curse, slander or profane.
[22] Jesus had just cast a demon from a man who was blind and mute [Mt. 12:22] giving indisputable evidence of the power of God had just occurred. But the Pharisees, with hard hearted unbelief, credited this display of God’s power to Beelzebul, the devil. They denied the healing power of God and in essence denied the saving power of God in Jesus Christ! They said Jesus “had an unclean spirit.”

Such slander of the Holy Spirit, Jesus implied, reveals a spiritual blindness, a warping and perversion of the moral nature, that puts one beyond hope of repentance, faith, and forgiveness. Those who call the Holy Spirit “Satan” reveal a spiritual cancer so advanced that they are beyond any hope of healing and forgiveness. Thus, committing the “unpardonable sin” implies final rejection of God’s offer of pardon.

If anyone should have recognized their Messiah it should have been these scribes of the Law of God. But their heart had been hardened by jealousy, envy and pride and have come to the point of no return!
Hebrews 3:7–11 NKJV
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you will hear His voice, 8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, 9 Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. 10 Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’ 11 So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”

Is there an Unpardonable Sin today?

Since the writing of this scripture Jesus has finished the work He came to do in salvation and the Holy Spirit is now the means by which God draws men to Himself in salvation, unlike when Christ walked in His earthly ministry.
John 6:44 NKJV
44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 16:7–11 NKJV
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Since Jesus is not present in the flesh as was the case in Mark 3, the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, specific as it was to the Pharisees’ situation, cannot be duplicated today. Jesus Christ is not on earth, and no one can personally see Jesus perform a miracle and then attribute that power to Satan instead of the Spirit.
But a sin similar to that can happen today if a person continues to reject the drawing power of the Holy Spirit upon their life to come to faith in Christ. The only unpardonable sin today is that of continued unbelief. There is no pardon for a person who dies in his rejection of Christ. And that need not ever happen!
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
Romans 5:20 NKJV
20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more,
Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Acts 16:31 NKJV
31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
James 4:8 NKJV
8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
1 Corinthians 15:55–57 NKJV
55 “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Close;
There is no excuse that anyone should leave this world lost. Only a fool would hear and read of the great grace of God that has been revealed to all men in HIs Son Jesus Christ, and reject the continual draw of God’s love by His Holy Spirit in the world today to be pardoned from sin to escape God’s wrath.
I say this because that person has seen the work of God in countless lives of the saints past/present and still says in his heart, “there is no God.”
I pray you are no fool!
