2 Chronicles 34:14–25 KJV 1900
14 And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the Lord given by Moses. 15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan. 16 And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it. 17 And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the Lord, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen. 18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king. 19 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes. 20 And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king’s, saying, 21 Go, inquire of the Lord for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do after all that is written in this book. 22 And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect. 23 And she answered them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me, 24 Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah: 25 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.

Give A Review

So we have been talking about the Kingship as it has passed from Hezekiah, to Manasseh, to Amon, and now to Josiah. Of course, Hezekiah had done what was right in the sight of the Lord, though he did have two setbacks that we know about. He grew arrogant after being delivered from his sickness and he showed off his possessions and those of the Kingdom to the Babylonians.
Now I want us to remember that God raised up Hezekiah and added 15 years to his life. However, in connection with this actions with the Babylonians God also told him that the things of Jerusalem would one day leave Jerusalem and be carted away to Babylon.
Hezekiah of course dies and Manasseh assumes the throne. Does evil but turns from his way and begins the work to correct his actions. However, Amon takes the throne and once again turns away from the Lord and he is killed by his own servants. At this point, Josiah assumes the throne.
When Josiah assumes the throne he was 8, so he spent several years doing very little, relative to some of the others. However, after 8 years he begins to seek after God for himself and 4 years after that (12 years into his reign) he begins the process of cleansing all the land of Israel from the stench of false worship. Last week, we left off with Josiah commissioning the repair of the temple which had fallen into disrepair.
Three Key Takeaways
Talk to God before you do anything because your best intention and best effort has nothing on God’s best work.
Handle your money well and you will not have to worry so much about the “evil affects” of money.
Their is room in the House of God for every gift, even unconventional things not typically associated with Church.

Scripture Study

2 Chronicles 34:14–15 KJV 1900
14 And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the Lord given by Moses. 15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.
So they pull the money out of the safe room, out of the vault, or from the bank if you will and find among the money the Word.
This lets us know that someone thought enough of God and were fearful enough of what Manasseh or Amon was going to do that they hid the law among the money.
2 Chronicles 34:16–17 KJV 1900
16 And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it. 17 And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the Lord, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.
So they deliver the book of the Law to the King, with no indication having been given that he was looking for the book but they knew his heart enough to understand his desire for the law.
But they also came back again with a word of progress, once again denoting and underscoring the importance of order in the House of God.
They were submitted to their leadership and brought back reports to keep him informed and up to date.
2 Chronicles 34:18–19 KJV 1900
18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king. 19 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.
This lets us know that what Josiah had done, up to that point, was done without written knowledge of the law.
Can I say this, your faith and relationship with God ought to get beyond the point where you need him to write it down for you but you ought to get in relationship with him that you can WALK OUT HIS WORD.
Stuff like this is why people can’t stay saved more than 5 minutes after Church is over.
They get done shouting and before they leave the parking lot they are back to their old nature.
Cussing and fussing
Drinking and smoking
They have no word INSIDE of them because they only ever hear the Word for 35 minutes while the preacher is on the floor.
And so you have generations of people who got Pew Salvation.
Long as they are in the pew they are saved but take them from the pew to the door and they forget it all.
Now part of it comes from us preaching and propagating a weak Gospel, we are a Church with no power.
And what we are doing is slowly preaching the Church hollow.
That is why we must hide the Word in our Heart, such that no man can take it from us.
Josiah, he had not even heard the written law but instead heeded the voice of God.
The Holy Spirit will guide you even when you do not know exactly what to do
You may not know if you are violating God’s law but the spirit will let you know.
And Josiah grew upset because he knew they were in disarray but he did not yet understand the extent to which the Children of Israel had fallen
However, when he heard the Word he understood the predicament of his people.
2 Chronicles 34:20–21 KJV 1900
20 And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king’s, saying, 21 Go, inquire of the Lord for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do after all that is written in this book.
Ad so the King sent them to find out their status, to find out their stance, to inquire where they stood.
He wanted to know how far we had fallen and I imagine he wanted to know if their was time, room, space, and opportunity to get up.
2 Chronicles 34:22 KJV 1900
22 And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect.
And so, they went to the woman of God and made known the request of the King
Commentators say that in her role both as a prophet and keeper of the wardrobe she was actually part of the royal court.
Some commentators say that Josiah sent them to her specifically but whatever the case in both 2 Kings 22 and 2 Chronicles 34, this woman of God is named and asked and her response is nearly identical.
2 Chronicles 34:23–25 KJV 1900
23 And she answered them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me, 24 Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah: 25 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.
The prophet has these words delivered only to the King and not to the people
She also makes clear God’s anger because they have not fulfilled their portion of the law in accordance with the law.
What have we invited on ourselves because we do not obey the voice of the Lord.
True this woman is talking about curses but what undue ailments or issues do we face simply because we are unwilling to yield our will to his will.

Provide Key Takeaways

Do we have structure in the House of God that we can trust one another to fulfill an assignment?
Does your relationship with God exist beyond the four walls of the Church?
What have we invited on ourselves by virtue of our unwillingness to follow and obey the will of God?
