Hebrews 11:1 KJV 1900
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Pre-Sermon Ice Breaker

A german Shepherd, a Doberman, and a Cat died. In heaven, all three faced God, who wanted to know what they believed in. The German Shepherd said, “I believe in discipline, training and loyalty to my master.” “Good!” said God. “Sit at my right side.” “Doberman, what do you believe in?” asked God. The Doberman answered, “I believe in love, care and protection of my master.” “Aha,” said God, “You may sit on my left.” Then God looked at the cat and asked, “And what do you believe in?” The cat replied, “I believe you are sitting in my seat.”

Introduction

The book of Hebrews is a book of contrast and comparison. In the first 10 Chapters of this Epistle Jesus is compared to the prophets, to angels, to Moses and Joshua, to the Levitical priest, and to the Old Covenant. The key word in Hebrews is the Word Better. Jesus is better than everything he is compared to.
In Chapter 11 the motif shifts from doctrinal themes to practical examples. Hebrews 11:1 is the foundation of the authors argument and the rest of the chapter goes on to build on this important truth.
When I was a kid we used to watch a show called, “Name that Tune.” Contestants would compete to see who could identify a song played by the fewest number of notes. In Hebrews 11:1 we can identify the melody of faith played in Hebrews 11 with just 3 notes. Let’s look at them together.

Body

Now

Hebrews 11:1 KJV 1900
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Now is the Greek word De. It is a conjunction it connects the previous thought to the current thought. It marks a timeline. It is a small but, powerful word. Faith is not a yesterday, or tomorrow entity. It is now. Now faith. 14 Times in Hebrews 11 we read the words By Faith. Read with me....
When you need faith, you need it now.
Romans 12:3 KJV 1900
3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
Romans 10:17 KJV 1900
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Substance

Hebrews 11:1 KJV 1900
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:9 KJV 1900
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
Look at this word Promise.

Evidence

Hebrews 11:1 KJV 1900
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Evidence is the Greek word Elegchos.
Means proof of things unseen. Treating them as if they were already objects of sight rather than hope.
Hebrews 11:8 KJV 1900
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
