Message

First Parable

The Sower

Matthew 13:3–9 (ESV)
3 And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. 5 Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, 6 but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.
8 Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 He who has ears, let him hear.”
Explanation = Matt 13:18-23
The SOWER does not change
The SEED does not change
The SOIL must be the problem
How do we change the soil?
Path
birds…
Rocky
sun meant to bring growth - scorches
Thorny
slow & un-noticed
How to identify good soil?
growth
Second Parable

The Weeds

Matthew 13:24–30 (ESV)
24 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. 26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27 And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’
28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ ”
Explanation = Matt 13:36-43
The sower sows GOOD seed
When did the bad weed seeds get sown…?
Where were they sown…?
Then what did he do…?
It took time to See the difference
There will always be weeds in the field - grow together…
They will one day be rooted out
Third

The Mustard Seed

Matthew 13:31–32 ESV
31 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. 32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
Loss and restoration of garden living…
Eze 17
Ezekiel 17:23 ESV
23 On the mountain height of Israel will I plant it, that it may bear branches and produce fruit and become a noble cedar. And under it will dwell every kind of bird; in the shade of its branches birds of every sort will nest.
America the melting pot… Kingdom makeup!
Image
From very small seedlings, the plants grow rapidly and enter a phase of dense flowering; the blooms have an intense yellow colour. The plants reach their full height of 5 to 61/2 feet as their flowers fade and after numerous green seedpods appear on their branches. The pods of brown mustard contain up to 20 seeds each, those of white mustard contain up to 8 seeds. Mustard plants are easy and inexpensive to grow; they flourish on many different types of soil, suffer from unusually few insect pests or plant diseases, and tolerate extremes of weather without serious harm.

The Leaven

Matthew 13:33 ESV
33 He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”
Growth of the Kingdom in this world
Warning of False Issues
false christians = the tears
false growth = the mustard seed growing to the point that birds next in it
false doctrine = Levin is bad in Bible

The Hidden Treasure

Matthew 13:44 ESV
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Jesus is the treasure we must give up everything to possess

The romance of treasure seeking
The reality of treasure seeking
Matthew 6:33–34 ESV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Ecclesiastes 5:10 ESV
10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.
Sixth

The Pearl

Matthew 13:45–46 ESV
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
Jesus is the pearl of great price and we must part with everything for Him
the way a pearl is made…
The purposeful seeker vs the haphazard finder
worth loosing everything for !!!
Philippians 3:8 ESV
8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
Exalting Jesus in Matthew The Parables of the Treasure and the Pearl (vv. 44–46)

Because the kingdom of heaven is something worth losing everything for, we joyfully let go of all things in order to passionately take hold of one thing.

Exalting Jesus in Matthew The Parables of the Treasure and the Pearl (vv. 44–46)

We come to Christ because He offers great reward; He is great reward.

The Problem
Jesus is not hidden, He did not hide
We cannot find anything!! Rom 3.11
Romans 3:11 ESV
11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.
what do we have to give?
The Alternative Treasure
The Field is the World = Mt 13:38 = explains this…
Jews are the treasure
Jesus buys the world to receive the treasure
The Alternative Pearl
The Merchant is Jesus
Lk 19.10 He seeks us out !!
The pearl is the church
He purchases us
Seventh

The Net

Matthew 13:47–50 ESV
47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
For the Fisherman
They do not discriminate while the net is out
it is only after it is full that it is gathered in
Evidenced by Matt 7:21-23
Matthew 7:21–23 ESV
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Close

Matthew 13:53–58 (ESV)
53 And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there, 54 and coming to his hometown he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”
57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” 58 And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.
Matthew 13:51–52 (ESV)
51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”
Jesus teaches about the Kingdom, that although unrecognized or rejected by many, is currently hidden in plain sight and accomplishing its purpose and will one day be revealed to all either to their glory or destruction.
Chapter 14 = going to give real life illustration of all these truths in these parables… !!!
