Castle Doctrine
Florida's “Stand-Your-Ground” law was passed in 2005. The law allows those who feel a reasonable threat of death or bodily injury to “meet force with force” rather than retreat. Similar “Castle Doctrine” laws assert that a person does not need to retreat if their home is attacked.
Right Hook
This week we are going to look at Jesus clearing the temple. The synoptic gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke all record this event at the end of Jesus’ ministry right after the triumphal entry. Today though we are going to look at John's account of the clearing of the temple which takes place at the beginning of His ministry
Explanation
So get out your Bibles Get out your Bibles and turn to John 2:17-22
Just so you know the clearing of the temple is recorded in:
Matthew 21:12-17
Mark 11:15-18
Luke 19:45-48
Each of these are just a short account of the event, recorded in just a few verses.
Jesus repeats the same theme in each
“ ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ e but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”
Matthew 21:12-17 12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “ ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ e but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”
Mark 11:15-18
15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’” 18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching
Luke 19:45-48
Jesus at the Temple
45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “ ‘My house will be a house of prayer’; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’” 47 Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
But today let’s take a look at John’s account.
John 2:13-25
Jesus Clears the Temple Courts
13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” o 18 The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” 20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
John’s account has the most detail
Jesus made a whip
He drove out cattle, sheep and doves
He talks about rebuilding the temple in three days but the crowd can only understand a temple that is a building.
John's account takes place right after the miracle of turning water into wine in Cana
All the temple clearings can and should be look at as as miracles
There were hundreds and maybe thousands in the temple courts that Jesus drove out.
Application
So what are we to take away from these events?
Jesus is the son of God
Clearing the temple is a miracle that provides proof that He is the Son Of God
Jesus proves He has power over death by saying,
“Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” 20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.”
In just a few weeks we are going to celebrate that He did Just that triumphed over death.
Let’s also answer these questions.
How does clearing the temple apply to our lives today?
Why was Jesus upset with what was going on in the temple?
The people were making it into something that it wasn’t supposed to be.
They were buying and selling and on top of that they were also cheating the people.
Also the priest of the temple were in on the dishonesty that was taking place
So where is the temple of God today?
Inside of us
God lives in the heart of man in the from of the Holy Spirit
The counselor
The companion that helps us
So if the temple is us, is God happy with how we are using it?
Have we made it a den of robbers or turned it into a marketplace?
Paul in Acts 17 talks about God not living in a building built by human hands
24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ r As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’
29 “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. 30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
If the temple is to be a house of prayer and not a marketplace then how are we doing?
What do we need to drive out of the temple that is our christain life?
You might say how can my christian life become a market place?
Think about this question we ask each other, what do you do? We often gain an identity based on what we do for a living.
Maybe a better answer to this question would be: I am a child of God and I love Him and He takes care of me. My first identity is to be Christian.
What is polluting our temple, What should we be turning over in our lives to be a better christian and person?
Wow this is a biggy
Worry (we talked about last week)
Lust
Drugs
Michael VideoWorry
Chasing the almighty dollar.
Wasting time
Filling our minds with useless stuff
Clutter and stuff (Spark Joy)
Turning are Christian Life into a religious ritual where we are just going through the motions? Fake Christians that are unloving legalistic, and making it hard for the world to see the love that God has for us.
So are we going to misuse our temple or are we going to live a life of prayer and communion with our creator God?
I choose prayer and communion and I hope you will too.
Life is so much better when we have cleared out what distracts us from God.
Life is so much better when we are living out what we are made to do.
I could see on Michael’s face when I made the video of him that there was a peace about him.
He cleared out his live and the God is dwelling in him
Today you can clear out your life and experience God living in you.
Call to action
Let me pray for you.
