INTRODUCTION: Bowling with bumper lanes.
If you don’t know what you are aiming for you will miss it every time. - as for me and my house we will play baseball, get a 4.0 etc....

The purpose of parenting is to glorify God.

Ways children glorify God: - (Ephesians 6:1-3)

Obey

Ephesians 6:1 ESV
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Children - not infants, just kids. Anyone still living in your house.
obey - stronger than submit. Easy enough right? haha
I’m sorry to kids for sore ribs haha.
In the Lord - teach your kids this is for the Lord.
For this is right - every culture agrees with this.

Honor

Ephesians 6:2–3 ESV
2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
honor - this is a lifetime requirement. Many take care of parents.
Quotes 10 commandments. Exodus 20.
When small, you honor by obedience. When older you, it is ascribing worth to them. Prov 31 - child shall called her blessed.
promise - goes back to Israel.
Go well - 1st thing
live long - 2nd thing haha, because mom won’t kill you.
Lit - honor your parents and your life will be better.
What if you live with kids who refuse to honor you? you must act honorable: YOUR KIDS WILL BE CHANGED BY YOUR BEHAVIOR. NOT YOUR ADVICE.
Say your sorry.

Ways parents glorify God: - (Ephesians 6:4)

Don’t provoke

Ephesians 6:4 ESV
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Fathers - fathers and mothers.
Do not provoke your children - Causing them to rebel. Notice the first thing that is stated is: don’t provoke them.
Fathers are the hemostats - if you are angry, you will provoke them.
but, how? We see it next.

Train up

Ephesians 6:4 ESV
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Bring them up - nurture them, same as how you treat their wife.
discipline - how do we nurture them in discipline? 1. you must discipline them. Spank them. (prov 23:13 - never out of anger but out love, Prov 13:24 spare the rod, hate the child).
Instruction - train them as if church isn’t necessary. Go to church so often you don’t need family training.
If you treat church as optional, don’t be surprised when your kids treat Jesus as optional.
of the Lord - soccer story.
CONCLUSION: Treat your kids like God treats you. Shepherd story. break leg to bring them back.

Alex Cravens, the Youth Pastor at Butterfield Church in Russellville, Arkansas, recently made a post that has gone viral and brought me to tears. It reads:
Don’t feel sorry for or fear for your kids because the world they are going to grow up in is not what it used to be. God created them and called them for the exact moment in time that they’re in. Their life wasn’t a coincidence or an accident. Raise them up to know the power they walk in as children of God. Train them up in the authority of His Word. Teach them to walk in faith knowing that God is in control. Empower them to know they can change the world. Don’t teach them to be fearful and disheartened by the state of the world but hopeful that they can do something about it. Every person in all of history has been placed in the time that they were in because of God’s sovereign plan. He knew Daniel could handle the lions den. He knew David could handle Goliath. He knew Esther could handle Haman. He knew Peter could handle persecution. He knows that your child can handle whatever challenge they face in their life. He created them specifically for it! Don’t be scared for your children, but be honored that God chose YOU to parent the generation that is facing the biggest challenges of our lifetime. Rise up to the challenge. Raise Daniels, Davids, Esthers and Peters! God isn’t scratching His head wondering what He’s going to do with this mess of a world. He has an army He’s raising up to drive back the darkness and make Him known all over the earth. Don’t let your fear steal the greatness God placed in them. I know it’s hard to imagine them as anything besides our sweet little babies, and we just want to protect them from anything that could ever be hard on them, but they were born for such a time as this. ~Alex Cravens
