What Does God Actually Say About Losing Your Salvation?

Hebrews 6:4–6 NASB95
For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.
The spirit that rests on religion facilitates something called Filtering the Text. Filters are used to eliminate things in order to achieve a desired result!
What is the desired result from Filtering the Text from generation to generation? The desired result is for you to not be able to Hear the Voice of God when you read the text!
The book of Hebrews is one of the more difficult books of the Bible to interpret and understand correctly. So, today we will seek to help you understand why it is difficult to interpret and understand correctly!
I. The WARNINGS that are ISSUED in the book!
A. DRIFTING from the TRUTH!
Hebrews 2:1–3 NASB95
For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard,
B. Being HARDENED by SIN!
Hebrews 3:12–13 NASB95
Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
C. FALLING from GRACE!
D. SINNING WILLFULLY!
Hebrews 10:26–31 NASB95
For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
E. REFUSING to HEAR!
Hebrews 12:25 NASB95
See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking. For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven.
These five warnings can be challenging to understand correctly and it is imperative that we approach them without Filtering the Text!
II. The AUDIENCE that is TARGETED!
A. Jews who have been CONVERTED by not GROWING in grace!
Hebrews 5:12–14 NASB95
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.
B. Jews who are CONVINCED but not yet BELIEVING in Christ!
Hebrews 2:1 NASB95
For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.
Hebrews 2:3 NASB95
how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard,
C. Jews who are CONVICTED but not yet EMBRACING!
III. The INTERPRETATION that is JUSTIFIED!
A. The HYPOTHETICAL interpretation!
B. The LITERAL interpretation!
C. The PROBABLE interpretation!
Why Do I Believe In The Probable Interpretation?
The meaning of Once Enlightened =
The meaning of Tasted the Heavenly Gift =
The meaning of Partakers of the Holy Spirit
The meaning of Tasted the Good Word of God
The meaning of Tasted the Powers of the age to come
Are there examples of people in Scripture who have done these things?
JUDAS
SIMON the SORCERER
HEROD
AGRIPPA
What is the Clear Teaching of Scripture on Eternal Security of the Believer?
Philippians 1:6 NASB95
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:38–39 NASB95
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1 Peter 1:4–5 NASB95
to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Jude 24 NASB95
Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,
2 Timothy 1:12 NASB95
For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.
Ephesians 1:13 NASB95
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
So, what can we conclude about this passage of Scripture?
Galatians 5:4 NASB95
You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.
Hebrews 6:9 NASB95
But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way.
