John 15:1 ESV
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.
ISRAEL WAS CHOSEN TO BE A BLESSING. THEY FAILED. JESUS DIDN’T.
Jeremiah 2:21 ESV
21 Yet I planted you a choice vine, wholly of pure seed. How then have you turned degenerate and become a wild vine?
Hosea 10:1–2 ESV
1 Israel is a luxuriant vine that yields its fruit. The more his fruit increased, the more altars he built; as his country improved, he improved his pillars. 2 Their heart is false; now they must bear their guilt. The Lord will break down their altars and destroy their pillars.
John 15:2–5 ESV
2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 5:19 ESV
19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
John 15:6–8 ESV
6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
Love God and do whatever you please: for the soul trained in love to God will do nothing to offend the One who is Beloved.
ATTRIBUTED TO SAINT AUGUSTINE
John 15:9–14 ESV
9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.
IN JOHN JESUS IS CONSTANTLY BEING OBEDIENT TO THE FATHER. IN JOHN 4:34 HE SAYS MY FOOD IS TO DO THE WILL OF MY FATHER. IN JOHN 6:38 HE PROCLAIMS I DID NOT COME TO DO MY WILL BUT THE WILL OF THE FATHER. IN 8:29 HE SAYS I ALWAYS DO WHAT IS PLEASING TO HIM. THIS CLIMAXES IN THE CRUCIFIXION:
John 14:31 ESV
31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
John 15:15–16 ESV
15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT DOING SOMETHING FOR GOD – IT’S DOING ALL THINGS WITH HIM!

John 17:18–26 ESV
18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. 20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
