The day before vacation. How many of us have taken some time off and spend the few days leading up to it. trying to fit everything in. We seem to be busy trying to get things done. To get a job, to get a house. to get that paper turned in before midnight. That takes many forms based on the person. We exhibit how that manifests in different ways.
Differences in Planning
because we think we know
James 4:13–16 NLT
13 Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” 16 Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.
lining up our plans with Christ
Proverbs 16:3 NLT
3 Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.
This difference leads us to God’s rest. exhale, no worries, no stress, no anxiety.
Hebrews 4:6–13 NLT
6 So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. 7 So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.” 8 Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. 9 So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. 10 For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. 11 So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall. 12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.
v11 do is an action. do our best. is that what we do, or do we just expect that God is going to plop his rest in our laps? Its okay for us to plan things. We just have to plan based on what God it trying to do. (How we got the church building)
v12 its not a list of stuff, but its like that one friend that keeps us on the path of righteousness, the one that encourages us when we fall, or the one that corrects us when we are wrong, or the one that celebrates us when we succeed. We may THINK we are doing things with spiritual motivations. Dont harden your heart. We approach the Kingdom with OUR list, our plan for our stuff. We should plan for God’s stuff and HE will fulfill our list. Our Kids…you cant see what I see.
For: CONJUNCTION because; seeing that; since more formal than because and used to introduce evidence or explanation for an immediately preceding statement “comfort him, for he is sad”
v13 We might have to stop thinking like we think. God sees and knows everything. We may trick our way thru earthly things, but it is God that we give account to.
Close: I believe we enter this rest when we are still here on earth.
