Intro

The passover is a type
a picture of what Christ will do in his life, death, and resurrection
it is a type of salvation
Paul refers to Christ as our sacrificial lamb
1 Cor 5:7-8 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
passover was a meal to share, a meal to eat, and a meal to explain.

The family

The nation of Israel was a family
both spiritually and biologically
A celebration for the whole family of God
slaughter the lamb together
stay inside together
keep the feast of unleavened bread together
hold a sacred assembly together
if anyone does not do these they are to be cut off
a picture of what is to come
the rejection of the family is a rejection of God
the rejection of this ordinance is a rejection of God’s salvation
(we will see why later)
“Since salvation was something they shared, it was only right for them to join together for the feast that praised God for the grace they had all recieved.”
Church worship
we gather together to worship God because we share in the grace and salvation that we recieved from him
NT authors talked about salvation in the plural form (we)
Christians who do not practice corporate worship are in grave spiritual danger.
“To have union with Christ is to have communion with His Church.”
Like passover, the LS is a meal to be shared. a tangible demonstration of our community in Christ.

Requirement

Circumcision required
living with Israel gave them many perks but they are not counted as God’s people without obeying this command
it was an outward showing of their inward commitment to God
Baptism is the same for us
we cannot partake in the LS without the outward showing of our inward commitment to Christ
thus baptism is required to take the LS

Why a meal?

so real we can taste it
salvation
sharing a meal is a form of fellowship
when God invites you to the table he wants a relationship with you
Rev. 3:20 ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.
we receive into our bodies a physical reminder of what Christ did
the bread for his body
the juice for his blood

Explain (13:1-10)

great meaning in passover
needed to be explained so it does not become meaningless
“When God rescued me from Egypt”
personal, they had to give personal testimony. As do we, we must be ready and able to tell others, this is what God has done for me
We now must also share and explain
the gospel, faith, the Bible to our children
the parent/grandparents and the church
