A mom wakes her son up on Sunday morning …says “Johnny, time to get up for church.” Johnny says ..”ah mom, I don’t wanna’ go to church today!” “Nonsense!” says Johnny’s mom. “Now, get up from there and get ready!” Johnny says …”Give me two good reasons why I should go down there.” His mom replies ..”For one thing, you could stand to hear a word from the Lord, and secondly ..YOU’RE THE PASTOR!

SCHOOL / WORK – DISNEY WORLD: Contrast getting up for school / work to getting up to go on vacation to Disney World.

MOTIVATING THRUST: Wake Up!! Following Jesus is exciting stuff!!!

READ SCRIPTURE: John 11:1-4, 14, 23-27

  1. WAKE UP - That He May Have the Glory v.4
    1. v.4 “When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.
    2. Tough Times: Story of “cocoon”
      1. ..the story of a man who visited an orange grove where an irrigation pump had broken down. The season was unusually dry and some of the trees were beginning to die for lack of water. The man giving the tour then took the visitor to his own orchard where irrigation was used sparingly. "These trees could go without rain for another 2 weeks," he said. "You see, when they were young, I frequently kept water from them. This hardship caused them to send their roots deeper into the soil in search of moisture. Now mine are the deepest-rooted trees in the area. While others are being scorched by the sun, these are finding moisture at a greater depth."
      2. Matt. 13:5Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. 6 But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away.
    3. Tough Times – Usually, the easy way is not the best way. Who gets the glory during the trials in your life? Is it the Lord Jesus? Who gets to grow closer to Him during those struggles? You do!

#. WAKE UP - That We May Believe v.14

    1. Physically Distant –Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Trips with JHA.
    2. Jesus stayed away for 2 more days, after finding out Lazarus was ill. He did this so that others (especially the Jews) might see the miracle in Him waking Lazarus from death.
    3. POINT: When the Lord “seems” distant …do you continue to believe?
      1. pisteuō—to have faith in, to entrust
    4. FUNNY: Doubting Martha’s thinking that Jesus was talking about “resurrection in the last days”. Can you imagine her face when the light bulb came on? Jesus is the resurrection and the life!!
      1. A famous evangelist told the following incident: I have a friend who in a time of business recession lost his job, a sizable fortune, and his beautiful home. To add to his sorrow, his precious wife died; yet he tenaciously held to his faith -- the only thing he had left. One day when he was out walking in search of employment, he stopped to watch some men who were doing stonework on a large church. One of them was chiseling a triangular piece of rock. 'Where are you going to put that?' he asked. The workman said, 'Do you see that little opening up there near the spire? Well, I'm shaping this stone down here so that it will fit in up there.' Tears filled my friend's eyes as he walked away, for the Lord had spoken to him through that laborer whose words gave new meaning to his troubled situation.
      2. POINT: Trust the Lord when He is near, and when He seems distant.

#. WAKE UP - That We Might Live & Learn To Love v.35-36

    1. v.35-36 - Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”
      1. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
    2. Rom. 5:8 – “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
    3. Have you demonstrated “love” toward someone today? Maybe when they least expect it, or when “you” least expect it, giving a few moments of time, or a kind word, or sharing the good news of Jesus with someone …might make all the difference in the world.

SKIT:

JESUS:I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?
