Give Scripture: 2 Chronicles 33:1-9

2 Chronicles 33:1–9 KJV 1900
1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem: 2 But did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, like unto the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel. 3 For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down, and he reared up altars for Baalim, and made groves, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them. 4 Also he built altars in the house of the Lord, whereof the Lord had said, In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever. 5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord. 6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger. 7 And he set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever: 8 Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers; so that they will take heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses. 9 So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the Lord had destroyed before the children of Israel.

Give A Review

So last week, we concluded the last bit of 2 Chronicles 32 and we talked about some of the most consequential moments in the lives of the Children of Israel. The Children of Israel were led by God and guided by their leader to a God-given victory against the Assyrians who suffered destruction at the hands of the God of Abraham. Then we close in on the final portions of 2 Chronicles 32 and we see the King, Hezekiah, fall sick. He goes on to be healed and is given a sign and it is through this wonder of God that Hezekiah becomes arrogant. However, he along with the people of God make intercession on behalf of the King and the Lord withdraws his wrath.
The scripture then recounts the story of Hezekiah and talks about his many accomplishments that the Lord allowed him to fulfill over the course of his reign. He built dams, acquired wealth, restored the temple, restored the Levitical priesthood, and did many other works for God. Hezekiah then dies, and is honored in his death as his Son Manasseh rises up to become King.
Three Key Points/ or Takeaways
Do not let God’s gifts create arrogance and self-righteousness within you.
God’s gifts to you go beyond the spirit and are meant to give you power to build up A KINGDOM not just a Church.
God can and will give you power to overcome generational curses that you inherit as burden.

Scripture Study

2 Chronicles 33:1–2 KJV 1900
1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem: 2 But did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, like unto the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.
You cannot afford to go back to your past
This is the first King which we see described as having performed abominations like unto the Canaanites who had been cast out of the land.
Manasseh stepped outside of the now and went back into the times of Joshua in his actions and offense to God.
2 Chronicles 33:3 KJV 1900
3 For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down, and he reared up altars for Baalim, and made groves, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.
If you do not properly train up those who come after you, your offspring will spend their years undoing everything you spent your life trying to do.
How many wealthy people left money to children, only for their children to go broke?
How many people with clean criminal record had children, only for them to spend their lives in jail?
How many saved people lived for Jesus, only to have children who gave up on God?
What is the point in working towards something if you will not work to secure it long-term?
You can create a generational curse not by what you do but even by what you fail to do as a parent or leader.
It is one thing to worship but another to serve, and we see him in service to the other gods of heaven.
Many of us may call ourselves worshipping God but I have to ask you are you serving God?
Are you serving God or your job?
Are you serving God or your wallet?
Are you serving God or your husband?
We are to do all things as unto the Lord.
So you go to work with a mind to serve him.
You earn money with a mind to serve him.
You serve your husband/ or wife with a mind of service to God.
That is the Kingdom Mentality.... Living, in all things, as service to the Lord.
2 Chronicles 33:4–5 KJV 1900
4 Also he built altars in the house of the Lord, whereof the Lord had said, In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever. 5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord.
He built up altars for other gods where Gods altars were and should have been.
He is pimping out God’s places to offer praise to other gods.
How many of you are pimping out the altar of your heart, the altar of your mind, the altar of your spirit for the sake of another god.
He also desecrated the House of God that his father had worked so hard to build.
2 Chronicles 33:6 KJV 1900
6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.
He is not just offending God but he is causing suffering against God’s people, namely his own children.
The Valley of the Son of Hinnom is reminiscent of Gehenna or death/ the grave.
I love this quote by John Thompson in his commentary on the books of the Chronicler… in it he says.
1, 2 Chronicles (1) Relapse under Manasseh (33:1–10)

All in all, the sins of Manasseh detail the depths to which counterfeit religion will take a person. Here was the Davidic king, the heir and keeper of the promises of the covenant with David, worshiping poles and stones and the stars. Worse yet, he was murdering his own sons, one of whom otherwise might have been heir to the throne and the covenant. Paganism, whether in its ancient or modern manifestations, is not only an offense to God but is a degradation to humankind.

We spend great length talking about the offense to God but what about the offense and cost to his people.
The Word is not clear but it says he sacrificed his own Son meaning that COULD be his first born son and heir.
However you look at it, he is wiping out his own blood line in worship to some other god(s).
2 Chronicles 33:7–8 KJV 1900
7 And he set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever: 8 Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers; so that they will take heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.
I read this scripture and it made me to ask this question… have we as the Church sat back and watched as some Pastors placed themselves in the House of God as an idol?
Have we as the Church lifted up some preachers to such a pedestal that they become a graven image in the House of God, elevated to a position above even the name of our God?
I do not mean any Church in general but just the Church… because we have to understand that if we are to be a Kingdom we have to keep our brethren and so if one Church does it while we sit idly by… we have to accept some fault.
And I never want us as a LOCAL church to fall into that same trap so we must have conversations like these to help us.
Do we recognize the price associated with some of these actions… that we deny OURSELVES God’s promises to us by being how we are?
2 Chronicles 33:9 KJV 1900
9 So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the Lord had destroyed before the children of Israel.
See what happens when we play follow the leader?
It has happened sometimes where a King followed the people into Paganism or idol worship but in this case… the King led the people into idol worship and created situations wherein the people of God turned away from God.
Furthermore, knowing what Ahaz did we have to ask ourselves… how bad was Manasseh that the scripture says he did worse than even the heathen?

Provide Key Takeaways

Be careful of what you place on the altar of your heart?
Plan for the future beyond yourself, and be sure to plan for the next generation to prevent generational curses rising up in your lineage.
Remain aware of the role you play in separating the church from God.
