Chapter 20 ends with Death & Hades being thrown into the lake of fire.
The second death.
And all whose name was not written in the book of life along with them.
Thus there seems to be some good and bad to consider.
Good in the sense that the righteous judgement of God takes place.
Bad in that there are many who will face judgement.
We will begin by reading the first 8 verses.
Revelation 21:1–7 ESV
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” 5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. 7 The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
Revelation 21:8 ESV
8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

The New

“new heaven and a new earth”
First God destroys the first heaven and the first earth.
The have “passed away”
“καινήν” - means new, but in what form?
Is it a new heaven and new earth in totality?
This “New” is the word used with we refer to quality or essence rather than time.
This is the same word used in the change of men in 2 Cor. 5:17
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
So we are talking about the regeneration of the earth just as man is regenerate. This is the proof of John 3:16
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
He loves His creation in total.
He totally transforms His creation.
Revelation 22:5 ESV
5 And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
Genesis 8:22 ESV
22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”
We can also compare to Is. 65:17-18
Isaiah 65:17–18 ESV
17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. 18 But be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness.
as compared to Rev. 21:1 and 4-5
Revelation 21:1 (ESV)
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
Revelation 21:4–5 (ESV)
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
We see the ultimate result, but let’s look at the at the details.
Revelation 21:2–3 ESV
2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.
WE have the answer to Is. 62:12
Isaiah 62:1–2 ESV
1 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give.
Jerusalem called by a new name and the realization that this will be the dwelling place of God.
He will be their God and they will be His people(s)
Revelation 21:6–8 ESV
6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. 7 The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. 8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
“It is done.”
But this is literally “They are done”
God is saying the prophetic promises have been completed.
so now based on vs. 6-7, The Lord will bestow graciously towards His own.
He will also curse those who are in rejection.

The Community of the Redeemed

Revelation 21:9–10 ESV
9 Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God,
Revelation 21:11–14 ESV
11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— 13 on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
The Bride in vs. 9 is symbolized by the “holy city Jerusalem” in vs. 10
This a comparative contrast to the Harlot of Babylon in 17:1, 3, & 4
Revelation 17:1 ESV
1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters,
Revelation 17:3 ESV
3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns.
Revelation 17:4 ESV
4 The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality.
AS we approach the later verses we see how the harlot was an imitation of the Bride as the enemy was an imitation of the Lord.
So we see the comparison, but we also need to look to what the Lord is using John to tell us about Himself, His people, and His dwelling place.
