What Barnabas did

i. Background
1. One heart and mind
2. No needy people
3. People were selling off stuff to give to those in need.
4. Then verse 36

36 For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. 37 He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.

iv. He introduces Paul to the church, and they plant churches together

22 When the church at Jerusalem heard what had happened, they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw this evidence of God’s blessing, he was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord. 24 Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith. And many people were brought to the Lord.

What Ananias did

i. He sells a field also
ii. Conspires with his wife to keep some of the money but to say this was the full amount
iii. They lie
Acts 5:3 NLT
3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.
Acts 5:5 NLT
5 As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified.

Four Things Wrong with Ananias and Sapphira

They loved their money.
1. They couldn’t bear the thought of giving it all away.
They wanted to look more generous than they really were.
1. They not only loved money, but they also loved the praise of men
They lied
1. To cover their covetousness
They disgraced the Holy Spirit.
1. Verse 3 says they lied to the Holy Spirit.

The Great sin of hypocrisy

How Was Barnabas Different?

He did not love money and things.
1. He delighted in the freedom of faith.
He did not need the praise of men. He had the approval of God.
1. He was real.
He could be trusted.
1. His integrity became legendary
He brought no reproach on the Holy Spirit.
1. He knew that the Spirit was alive and real in the church.
2. He knew that his every thought was open and laid bare before the Spirit of truth.
