INTRO

Have you ever seen a bear tear apart an animal?
me either.
but I would imagine its intense
its just tearing that animal up top to bottom picking at its favorite parts and just diving right in
it is ravenous
which is a cool word
ravenous
if you look it up
google says it means “very hungry”
Today I hope your ravonous for the Word of God
because we are going to tear into John 15 and dive right in!
But before we eat lets pray.
Look at John 15:11
John 15:11 NKJV
11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
I remember reading about a martyr who was imprisoned for smuggling Bibles into China
when they through him in prison they shredded the Bible
and the prisoners would use it as toilet paper since they didn't have any.
so this guy was given the worst job in prison for smuggling Bibles and was in charge of cleaning and clearing the sewers.
Occasionaly he would find a shredded piece of Gods Word covered in filth and He would hide it.
after a while he was able to collect and clean his first verse of the Bible....
now what a cliff hanger it would be if it was this verse?
what if it was James 4:8
James 4:8 (NKJV)
8 …Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
this is why I am not God
instead the verse was
2 Timothy 2:9 CSB
9 for which I suffer to the point of being bound like a criminal. But the word of God is not bound.
The Word of God is alive guys....
good news for us we have the privilege of reading what comes after John 15:11
we can know what will bring us God’s joy!
So lets go back 2 verses and see how we can achieve God’s joy?
if you're interested?
John 15:9–11 NKJV
9 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
this is one of those instances like when Isaac speaks Greek and you go “got it… wait what”
The Bible does some sort of mathematical equasion here.
the result is
= His Joy in you (v.11)
John 15:9 gives the key to joy
John 15:9 NKJV
9 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.
Abide in His love /live in His Love (v.9) = His joy in you (v.11)
but how do you live in His love?
John 15:10 (CSB)
10 If you keep my commands you will remain in my love, ...
sooo
Keep His commands (v.10) = abide in his love (v.9) = His joy in you (v.11)
so lets look at His commands
who knows what Hermeneutics is? (Biblical interpretation)
okay there is Hermeneutic /interpretational beauty here:
the greek word for command here is (entolay)
the first time it is used is when Jesus is talking about how He fullfills ALL the COMMANDMENTS OF THE BIBLE
looky looky
Matthew 5:17–19 CSB
17 “Don’t think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished. 19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever does and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
So good news champ you dont have to worry about the commands of the OT
Jesus fullfilled them all
now here is where the hermenuetical beauty of cross referencing comes in.
reread John 15:10
John 15:10 (CSB)
10 If you keep MY commands you will remain in my love, JUST AS I HAVE KEPT MY FATHER’S COMMANDS and remain in his love.
with Jesus things have changed.....since Jesus kept all of God’s commands / the entire OT we are no longer bound by it.
as Paul said in Gal 5:1-4
Galatians 5:1–4 NLT
1 So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law. 2 Listen! I, Paul, tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with God, then Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 I’ll say it again. If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses. 4 For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.
So we are are free from the law.... from its judgement, and our need to live by it.
why because of Jesus?
However Jesus has commands.
Keep His commands (v.10) = abide in his love (v.9) = His joy in you (v.11)
V
What are they?
John 15:12 CSB
12 “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you.
Keep His commands = abide in his love = His joy in you
V
Love each other like Jesus (v.12)
To go back to Gal 5
Galatians 5:13–14 NKJV
13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
what is the opposite of love?
selfishness
love
V
self-less action towards others
when we do this we “live in Jesus Love”
heres my question for you… where do you live?
“you live at vain hopes and dreams estate”
“you live at immediate pleasure ln?”
“you live at trying to impress people palace”
Will you live in Jesus love?
which means love others over youself, your hopes, dreams, over immiediate pleasures, over impressing people.
I dont know about you but I need help
I easily can just get focused on myself
boom Jesus got you
John 15:26 NKJV
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
Helper is παράκλητος, is referring to the Holy Spirit is used
inJohn 14:16 that He is with us forever
in John 14:26 that He will teach us all things and remind us of everything Jesus told you
In John 16:7 He is given to us for our benefit
and here in John 15:26 that He .....
The Holy Spirit will point us back to Jesus.

Fun facts

Love 10 times
abide 10
Command 5 times
fruit 8 times
joy 2 times
