Bible Text: Romans 9:6-16

Subject: God’s Sovereignty

Title: God’s Sovereignty Concerning Israel

Biblical Orientation:

Paul continues in the thought of Israel’s privileged past. The Jews had been given every privilege possible and still many were not saved. Therefore, Paul’s heart grieved

The Bible tells us about Christ, he came unto his own and his own received him not. Even with great privilege some do not get saved

We live in an ungodly world. Fewer are getting saved and the levels of ungodliness continue to get worse. Some people get to looking at the world and think, why should I tell those ungodly people about Christ? They will not listen

In our passage, Paul tells the Romans that it is not our choice who God chooses but His alone. The promises are God’s and the ability to show mercy and compassion is God’s; we are to be vessels of His grace

Sermon Orientation:

Tonight, Paul will reveal this through showing God’s sovereignty concerning Israel. He tells us who is Israel and that God’s sovereignty is righteous

A. God’s Word Can Make Any Jew An Israelite

1. Paul has just finished explaining that his heart was broken because many Jews were unsaved

a. With all their privileges, they had rejected the only Son of God

b. This thought caused Paul to have great sorrow

2. However, as sad as this was, it was not because God’s Word did not work

a. Gods Word is always powerful

b. God’s Word is always effective

i. Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it (truth)
ii. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (conviction)

c. Men make their own choice to ignore the Word of God

3. God’s promises through the Word always come true

B. Physical And Spiritual Israel, Birthright Is Not Enough To Be God’s Child

1. Some believe because they were born a descendent of Abraham that they were a proper Israelite

a. Earlier, Paul stated…

b. Romans 2:28-29 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God

i. Israel is not an outward form of religion
ii. Israel is a love of God in the heart

2. Unfortunately, spirituality does not pass down through heredity

a. If Mr. Smith is saved and has 5 children, all 5 of them must get saved

b. Each one must personally call on the Lord Jesus Christ for their salvation

c. Mr. Smith’s relationship with Jesus Christ does not translate to his children

C. The Example Of Isaac And Ishmael

1. God’s choice was not based upon fleshly desires but upon His own promise

a. Abraham ended up having a total of eight sons

b. However, only Isaac was the one chosen by God to perpetuate Abraham’s lineage

ü Genesis 21:12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called

2. Ishmael was the result of fleshly choices

a. Ishmael represents man’s attempt to go around God’s will

b. God is not satisfied by second class

3. Isaac represents the goodness of God to fulfill His promises in His perfect way

D. The Example Of Jacob And Esau

1. God’s choice was made before their birth, He chose Jacob

a. God’s choice was made with perfect knowledge

b. His omniscience allowed God to know who and what each of the men would become

i. God knew Esau would only be happy with what he could do with his own hands
ii. God also knew Jacob would wrestle with the Lord but finally his walk would be changed
iii. That is when God changed his name to Israel; signifying his spiritual birth
ü For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel
ü A good heritage does not translate into a spiritual descendent

2. What God hated about Esau was his ways

a. Esau loved the flesh

b. Esau had no care for spiritual things

3. Jacob turned out to be a man God could mold

A. It Is Not Possible For God To Act In An Unrighteous Manner

1. Part even uses his familiar phrase “God forbid”

a. Revealing that it is impossible for God to do anything unrighteous

b. Nothing should ever come out of our mouths that could even seem to suggest that!

2. Gods sovereignty allows Him to show grace and mercy to whomever He chooses

a. His choices are always right

b. His choices are always based in perfect knowledge

3. Tie the two sets of brothers together

a. The first set are brothers from different mothers

b. The second set of brothers are from the same mother

c. Either way, God’s choice was not based upon who a person is genetically

d. God chose upon divine knowledge

B. Who God Saves Is Not Up To Us

1. They may come from the right bloodline, they may not

2. They might even come out of the same family

3. Since God is right; He can show mercy and compassion to whom He chooses

a. He can show it to those who are righteous

b. He can show it to the unrighteous

4. It has nothing to do with man’s desire (willeth) or his effort (runneth); God knows who will accept His calling

Even With All The Privilege, Not All Were Israel

Ishmael chose to be who he wanted to be and Esau chose to be who he wanted to be

In both cases, they had equal opportunity

There was no parental advantage

It is not a failure of God’s Word

God gave both sets of boys parents that world raise them right

God chose right

Not All That Go To Church Are Saved

Even people whose names are on the membership rolls do not all go to heaven

A person may walk, talk, and act like a church member; but without Christ they will not go to heaven

Going to heaven is not a matter of the flesh but of the spirit

Make sure you are spiritually an Israelite (church member)

Be a member of God’s church through salvation and baptism not fleshly actions

When People Reject The Lord, His Promises Have Not Failed

ü 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance

In addition, if God chooses not to tell them the truth, He is still righteous

It is God’s choice

He knows what He is doing

The reason, He made the choice divinely and in perfect knowledge

Being A Part Of God’s Choice

Read 8

1. Many people get lost in the fact that some people get saved and that others do not

a. Spending too much time on that topic will drive you crazy

b. That is not the point

c. Let God decide who gets saved and who does not

2. Instead, focus on being God’s child and perpetuating His seed

a. We do not know what all God will do with Israel in the future, honestly, it changes your life very little

b. Raising up godly seed; that matters!

i. You can influence your children and adults
ii. You can get involved in children’s ministries and influence other children
iii. Deal with those adults that God brings into your life

3. Reveal the truth of the Lord to all you come into contact with

a. He will show mercy and compassion on those that will accept

b. It would be sad if we fail to tell one whom God would desire to save

Therefore, God’s choices allow Him to fulfill His own purposes. Do not fight God’s purposes, be one who works in His will to accomplish those purposes
